Description Many thanks in advance to those who've faved this! ^_^

Just for furr and hair.
Some brushes I made, others I adapted.

Use the smudge tool with these also.
-----

Instructions:

1) Click the "Download" Button to your Right.
2) Save to folder of your choice
3) Unzip the contents
4) Just place them into (copy to) your Gimp brushes folder and chose them from the brushes menu.
(in Linux it is in: /home//.gimp-2.2, in Windows it's in C:\Documents and Settings\\.gimp-2.2)

You may also have to check off a box (or make sure it's checked off) in the "Folders" section of Gimp (Start Gimp up > File > Preferences > Go down to "Folders" and there will be check boxes that you have to click on.) Otherwise, the contents of the Brushes folder will not show up.
See this screenshot for an idea of what to expect: [link]
----
For Gimp 2.6 (thanks to GimpTalk Forums [link] )
put them in C:\Documents and Settings\\.gimp-2.6\brushes.
Or even better is add new folders and link them from the Gimp preferences .( Edit/preferences/folder )
For Windows 7 users, the brushes need to go in C:\users\\.gimp 2.6\brushes .

It's on the right, below "Browse More Like This" and above "More From ~Gymnart"

dA keeps monkeying with where they put stuff. Very annoying.

The sense of instructions developed over a looong period of time and lots and lots of questions.

Thanks!
I hope the brushes worked out for you.

Nice.
Is this a WIP or is this finished? I'm asking because the hair could use some highlights. If you need to, you can look at some animΓ© pics for reference.

facetiousness In reply to Gymnart [2013-01-21 20:02:50 +0000 UTC]

finished, but i had some trouble with the highlights and they didn't come out looking very well, so i left it, but i'll work on it, and thank you c:

Gymnart In reply to facetiousness [2013-01-23 21:45:12 +0000 UTC]

This: [link] is basically how I do it. Notice that at least 5 tones are used. I like to use 3 or so. The lighter strokes should be INSIDE the medium ones and those strokes should be shorter.
You can color in the highlight regions using the regular circular brush THEN using the smudge tool with the hair brush, just smudge the hair enough to make the edges soft.
This is by deviantart's own *enayla [link] I like her advice and have used it before. Notice that not ALL the hair has been highlighted. And notice that the lightest of the light is in a very small area.

So GIMP is free?
And does it work on Vista?

lol I'm trying to find a new drawing thing since SAI isn't working for some reason on here...

and of course you have to pay for photoshop XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Gymnart In reply to Sparklepaws33 [2012-09-28 18:20:28 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for the late reply. I haven't been on the 'net in quite a while.
Yes, Gimp is FREEEE!
I'm not too sure that the newest versions work in Vista but you can try it and if not, then just uninstall it. Otherwise you can try an older version which should work well.

Get the newest one here:[link]
This is the place to get the older versions, should you need them: [link]

One of the things that I love about Gimp are the keyboard shortcuts. p for paint, o for the color picker (pick right from your source photo), and s for smudge, my favorite thing to do!
The other ones I use most are: c for clone tool, t for text tool, Shift + e for erase, Shift + c for crop.

Will you be using a mouse with it or a tablet? If you're using a tablet with it, see this post in the Gimp User Group forums: [link]

I use a mouse c:
and I can't get GIMP after all :c idk.. My mom said we'll look in the stores for an actual program since all these downloads kill my computer e-e...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Gymnart In reply to Sparklepaws33 [2012-09-29 17:30:19 +0000 UTC]

Gimp is an actual program. Why does she think it isn't?
You can show her this: [link]
Gimp has been around since February 1996, so it has been established in the art community. See this page for Gimp's history: [link]
And show her this: [link]

So, I guess your computer is not in good shape? The download is 76.9 MB in size and that can take a while, depending on your connection speed.

Oh yeah, this guy has good video demos of Gimp: [link] He's even done a tutorial featuring my brushes!!

RothvonSinner In reply to Gymnart [2012-10-20 13:33:51 +0000 UTC]

Gimp works the BEST on Vista.
At least that's what I understood when reading the downloads page.

It works very nicely anywhere u install it and the program is all clean from any unwanted sh!t.
Of course if someone uses other places than those featured mirrors for dowloading Gimp, I won't be that shure...

Gymnart In reply to RothvonSinner [2012-10-20 16:00:46 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for that info!
I'm just wishing they'd fix that bug that I found when using a Wacom Intuos tablet on Windows 7: [link]
The weird thing that I've found too (when using a Wacom tablet) was that when using the mouse, the cursor is far off from the actual mouse position. I always have to start Gimp using the stylus and then all works well.
It's not like that on Linux. All works fine except, I don't have pressure sensitivity but that's ok, because I have Carpel Tunnel Syndrome and having to press harder to show a stroke only makes it feel worse.

Color and then smudge! That's how I do it. Play around with layers too.

I was feeling a lil sad with being unable to make a good horse =/ ended returning to what Im good at; anime editing.

<33 Thanks for the tip, you color with paintbrush or airbrush? I need to watch more tutorials !!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Gymnart In reply to DeviantArtist2013 [2012-08-30 16:04:25 +0000 UTC]

I generally use the paint brush and then the smudge tool. Then I blend the colors starting with the smudge tool set to low settings (Rate set to 50% or less and the same with the opacity).

This looks promising:
[link]
Check this out too:
[link]
Horse tail:
[link]
This person uses dodge/burn to shade and highlight. I'm not used to doing it this way (I'm a traditionally trained artist) but it could work for you:
[link]

So anyway, those are just to get you started. I'd recommend using some stock photos from here until you get more familiar with the horse's anatomy and how to shade/highlight them.

I think the main reason why so many think they are failures at drawing certain things is that they aren't too familiar with their subject (in order to draw from memory). They need to draw from life or photos a LOT before drawing from memory!
