In contrast to the last Buxom Pirate, this picture had a relatively open and simple background. And I had every intent of keeping it that way.
Funny how things work out like that.
I was immediately caught by the ship in the right-hand background. The faintness of it made me think of fog, and before I really had a chance to argue with myself, I was looking at a soft pink dawn, with heavy clouds rolling it. Recalling that many pirate attacks took place at dawn, when lighting was questionable, I figured I'd go with it.

The only trouble with this is that, given the usual nature and deprivations of sailors at the time, she would never leave her cabin. The crew would see to that. Β

I was just looking at this again, and love how you brought the background to par with the rest of the picture. Russ's backgrounds are sometimes pretty sketchy to bring out the character in the foreground, but I like how the pirate ship in the back mingles with the fog. Groooooovy!

Thank you!! The background was rather light and sketchy for this image, but I really wanted to keep the feel of it. Rather than redrawing the background in higher detail, which wasn't my place to do, I thought the fog was a good way of keeping what was there, and explaining why it was vague.
