Description

"Understand this. So long as you stand in my way- so long as anybody stands in my way, I will respond by killing. Murder on an industrial scale. Because in the final analysis, I would happily wade across a river of corpses, chest-deep in rust and grease and engine oil, just to crush the spark of the last Autobot standing. And I would do so not simply as a means to an end, no. I'd do it, Prime, because it would give me pleasure."

Megatron, Chaos Theory

So, at Botcon 2013 I asked for a critique from the Art God Alex Milne on my coloring for this picture:

He was awesome and gave it a good, detailed going-over. (Thank you, Sir!!!!!) He asked my which mold it was. I had not even given that a thought. He recognized it as the Don Figueroa design by the slashes on the side of the helmet. (Because he is Alex.) And thus, he told me, I had colored it too light. He also said that there should be no light on the in-facing side of Megs's helmet, because it's not facing toward us enough to throw any light back. He said he liked what I'd done with the eyes and reflectiony bits.

I took the critique gratefully, and have gone around stoked ever since because my Marker Guru (see what I did there) took time to look at what I'd done, and had pronounced it mostly good. (true story -- he did.)

But it never stopped bugging me that now I knew how to do this pic better. So finally, I had to do it.
So here you have it: this is Black Megatron, at the bottom of his I-Hate-Everyone descent.
Here's what I did to color him:
First, I laid down purple all over him: cool purple for the light surfaces (including that one side of his helmet, because it's still facing the light even though it's not throwing much back at us), and warm purple for the shadow sides. Than I came in with grays. Actually, a dark warm brown for the deep shadows, and warm or cool grays depending on whether it was shadow or light surfaces. I did the thing with the eyes again, and this time I think it came out even better. Credit for that goes to the artist, not to me so much, because she put the hints of optical structure in there in very light lines, so I knew what to do with them. I went ahead and just let everything be purpley on him, because he's got those Tron-lines of Dark Energon Purple Glowy Stuff running all through him, and I figured what the heck -- color unity.

I'm very, very pleased with how this one turned out, and am feeling quite happy that following Alex's advice yielded such good results.
The only thing I like better in the first version are the neck cables.    UNF! *BITES FIST*

Let us all enjoy the irony that I was listening to talks by my church's leaders while I colored this. (I got a lot of coloring done this weekend

Original Lineart: black-heart-spiral.deviantart.… (Once again, thank you for sharing this with me!)
There's a hint of the watermark visible in this because I forgot to take it out when I printed it, but I do have permission to color this piece. (My printer is having an "I Do Not See The Paper in The Tray" kind of day, so I just colored over the watermark. It was faint.)

Yeah, this is awesome.
It's good to hear of AM/MG being helpful to somebody, because previously I've only heard of him brushing people off, and not being very nice. It always seemed like a shame because he is a true deity of transformers art. I think the new colouring you have for the neck cabling is much better suited to this picture. I can see why you like the other one, but it would have been too shiny for this Megsypic.

/agreed.
Alex is fine -- and actually very funny -- if he's with a small group of people he knows. (Judging by podcast interviews in which he is a totally different guy.) But yeah, he's intimidating from behind an artist's table. He knows he is -- he's posted about it. A lot of it is pressure to complete all the commissions he takes -- he seems like one of those guys who likes to get into the drawing zone and does not handle interruptions well. Anyway, he's a dude, and he does art I like, and that's all we can ask for, eh? I'm not the only one who had a relatively positive experience though -- there was a gal on Tumblr recently who gushed about spending time watching him work, and then he drew her a freebie little Tailgate sketch. Which is totally nice. So yeah. I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt.

Nice to hear from you! How've you been?

Oh, looking for work and jealously hoarding my future house deposit. Not too bad, actually. How about you?

Yeah, I-think it's pretty cool when somebody who's art is really amazing will stop and talk to a random person, and talk about the other person's stuff. (why this is relevant to this thread, eh?)  Excuse me, in on the tablet at the moment and it doesn't pick handwriting perfectly.

He looks absolutely stunning! The amount of detail with the colouring as well as the lineart is just fantastic, his eyes look so amazing and definitely the eyes of a malicious warlord, they just draw me in and make me wish he was real even more lol.

The colours of this picture simply are amazing and I love this picture so much!

I know -- it's been a year and I'm still high on getting that critique from him. He's totally intimidating, and does not sugar-coat things. But that makes any compliments given a thousand times more powerful.

typo lol: do not misplace the space in "but that," or you get "butt hat" *sporfle*

And thanks so much for looking at this and pronouncing it good -- your coloring technique is one of my most-admired, so I'm squeebling over here that you liked what I did.

Oh wow! I can imagine he'd be intimidating... his art and MTMTE is what got me into the TF comics. Like my friend had most of the IDW stuff and I read some, but didn't get into them other than Megatron Origin (which first pulled me in from the art) and Last Stand of the Wreckers. It wasn't until MTMTE came along that I really got interested in the comics OvO;

lol butt hat omg

No problem! And wow thanks!! OAO    I've just always been do whatever and take aesthetics over perfect anatomy/lighting. My rule's always "If it looks cool, keep it" lol I've been really enjoy drawing the IDW characters in my style >v<

I love that you do traditional marker! I'm always blown away when I see traditional art like this since lack of funds have prohibited me from attempting it. I'd totally freak out about making a mistake and I just think it's so amazing that you can do this!

I'd love to collab! Thanks for asking. If you ever feel like you'd want to put some of your glorious textured colors onto this I would love you forever:
And if you ever want me to desecrate something you've drawn with my poor markers, I'd be happy to do my best!

*jumps up on your ears and won't get down*

The Thing With the Eyes is even moar terrifying than it was the first time round. His glare now burns through my screen, singes across the top of TEH MULL3T and continues out through the back wall!!

You need to print off both versions and give them to Hasbro at BotCon. This is how to do a repaint!
