ohhhh younger Klax <3
I love the mothman idea <3
and reading through those stash files about Klaxon's perspective on the different ghosts! and the types of Voodoo he uses
that research really shows through with how much work you put in <3

This piece is absolutely incredible! It has this wonderfully dark feel to it and sends chills up my spine when I look at it. The pure whiteness of his eyes and the little smirk alone is very creepy, but your color choice and the lack of detail of the person in the background adds a whole new level to this picture. I love it!

This picture made me feel so many emotions so quickly! I'm not even sure how to put it into words, but the old faithful, I love this, definitely applies here. You really upped your game with this! I love when you go for the eerie cool stuff, especially with Klaxon!! You've done some pieces like this, but this has to be my favorite of all of them. It's so I can't even describe...It's aesthetically pleasing. I love darker pieces like this. The background and Klax's facial expression are just so beautiful to me, but not like the "yay the world is rainbows" beautiful...It's just so freaking cool that I can't get over it!! I just love it so much.
Well done here!!

Oh wow, this is like one of the nicest compliments ever! Thank you very much!! I'm just totally stoked you felt such an impact right away, and I never imagined such a dark and heavy illustration would connect to so many folks. Just wow, means a lot!! Personally, I find the unknown supernatural to be much more dangerous and creepy than human slasher killers, that tension of never knowing what to expect from them, and I wanted that to show in the scene and characters. Thank you for feeling it just by looking!
Me too! I am drawn to morbid art, and I also find beauty in things that might be considered twisted or eerie. Between images, I'd rather a photo of a broken down building over a shiny rainbow. And I connect better to expressions that aren't so happy, something more angry or tragic—or crazy-possessed. We got that in common, my friend, and thank you for appreciating this work so genuinely! I'm really flattered, like ahhh, I can't even!! Thank you again and again!!

Wow this is a freakishly neat shot into his past. The whole grim aesthetic and murky shadow of the watchers is painting such a heavy spook and, man... the cadaver eyes get me EVERY TIME!! Also, I've been meaning to ask: Are Klaxon's tattoos and piercings added in relation to life events?

Thank you!! "Freakishly neat" is a great compliment because it's pretty much what I was going for. XD I feel like even though Klaxon watches people using ghosts, there are probably higher level spirits that watch him in turn. The Shadow People are noted for doing just that. Glad you enjoyed the vibe! Ahhh, yay, someone enjoys those Cadaver Eyes as much as me. I appreciate that, man!
Well, not any specific life events. He started with the piercings just to experiment with his threshold for pain, since he closes himself off so much. The tattoos were chosen for their individual spiritual meanings, but the only one that ties into his own personal life is the heart-shaped Voodoo doll on his chest; there are three pins stabbing it, representing his parents and grandmother (he'll get a fourth added when he learns about Kamen), and the pin heads are white for a healing blessing. Suggesting, in a way, a broken heart.

Thanks! I kinda like doing creepy stuff. XD Oh, you mean why it's coined Red Magic? I don't know how accurate the websites I visited are, but that's factual according to some of my reading. Although I should specify it just seems to be strictly Louisiana/New Orleans Voodoo; in Creole the red eyes are oje rouge.

HOLY CRAP, HEATHER. Sometimes I don't even know what to say other than WOW.
Something I really, really, REALLY LOVE about your art and something I wish I could do myself is your attention to atmosphere. IT'S ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL. It just brings the whole piece together in such an amazing way.
GOD, MAN, YOU'RE SO TALENTED.

OMG THANK YOU!!
Your comment had me blushing beet-red, I can't even. I truly appreciate the high praise, it's quite motivating to read. I mean, I know I have a lot of areas where I still struggle and need major improvements, but I'm excited to know the trials-and-errors capture something atmospheric in the end. I'm so happy you enjoyed the illustration! Thanks!!
I think my attention to atmosphere is only a recent development, because I'm usually focusing on anatomy and characters. When I know I want to try a background, like a scene, what I started doing is choosing a base color. Here, after I finished Klaxon's lines, I made an under-layer of muted (desaturated) orange. That kinda helps me visualize the end result, to choose colors and details. And I pull a lot of ideas from effects and backdrops in movies. Maybe that might help?
Awww, thank you for saying so! You're so sweet~

Doesn't everyone? We all have our struggle spots. But if we dwell too much on what we don't like or find difficult, then you wouldn't be able to enjoy the piece at all!
That's sounds like a good idea! If I get a tablet, I'll totally try doing that! I've never payed much attention to backgrounds in my own drawings. But I really want to because sometimes I feel like they look a little too empty. Thanks for the tip!

That's true. Even the popular and professional artists on here have uploaded drawings where they described it in a very Debbie Downer way, pointing out their own flaws (or what they felt were flaws—honestly, sometimes I look and can't see it. Always our own worst critics). And you're right, we have to be proud of the finished pieces, for all the struggles and successes. That kinda good-and-bad harmony rather lends some personality, I guess. Thank you!
Gawd, backgrounds are hard. I admit, it's a rarity I have the strength to do them. Even this one I almost left off the background; I have a transparent .PNG file of just Kaz and the Mothman. But certain drawings and perspectives don't make sense without the scenery, and I'm pleased with myself for pushing through and getting it realized in full. You're welcome, though! I hope it comes in handy some day.
D'oh, that KF quote! Such a charmer!

OH! Haha, you're more than welcomed aboard his crazy train. XD I had a sneaking suspicion you might be into the Mothman, since you have an affinity for the supernatural Dark Arts and characters like Klarion and Constantine. Klaxon's not really at their level, nor will he ever be, but I totally appreciate the support. Gosh, all those kind compliments on my art, it's too much. THANK YOU!!

WHOA! I got chills just when I saw the thumbnail for this, Heather! If you were going for a spine-tingling mood, then I am happy to tell you that your mission has been accomplished, at least for me! Kaz looks more than a little alarming with that expression, and the background just cranks that up to a 9!

Wow, thank you, Yoru!! It makes me so happy to know I achieved that spooky level, because I wasn't sure if it would comes across at all moody or frightening, or just... kinda dark and crazy. Such a relief to read all your wonderful compliments—yay, success! And I'm tickled to see people alarmed by young Kaz's state here. XD I didn't expect this kind of reaction, wow. Seriously, thank you!

Thank you! I'm honestly really excited you described his look as "odd". That's something I was striving for, because I do want to show there's two emotions (possibly conflicting) there, his own and that of the ghost inside him. So odd is the best, means I got close. I really appreciate everything, and I'm glad you got such a chiller vibe from it, yay!

damn that sounds so ultimately badass ; - ; now you mentioned it, he doesl ook pretty possed o . o thats why his eyes are whitened out as well right? thats cool :3 what ghost/spirit is he possesed by?

HaintSoul In reply to SmlArt [2016-08-06 23:19:48 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! Yeah, the whitish eyes are when there's another soul inside him. When he was little the ghosts kinda possessed him of their own free will, but that's why he's training, so he can control them; in his current timeline he's strong enough as a Vessel that they can't use him. Ordinary ghosts, anyway. Oh, in this art it's just a random ghost with wicked intentions—maybe an executed serial killer? *evil grin*
