This was originally supposed to be a practice pic. I don't think I'd ever posted a pic on DA where I actually used a photo reference for a face, so I thought I'd pick a nice stock image and try to draw it as accurately as I could.But erm... I got bored doing that even though the face I chose is a very beautiful face. So I ended up changing things a bit: aged the man a little, extended and changed his clothes, added color, and then stuck in a background (no references on the background) as well.
So the final pic ended up being way different from the original despite my intentions. I can't seem to get away from fantasy/sci-fi/anime type images, hee! Anyway, this is obviously not my usual half-realistic/half-cartoony style. It leans more toward realistic. I hope. Anyway, I just wanted to post something different in my gallery.
The man's face was eyeballed from this lovely pic [link] . Thanks very much to for allowing me to use his photo. Please check out his gallery, everyone. He's got a lot of great stuff there.
Other than the reference photo, I also tried some different coloring methods. So that might be another reason why this looks different from my usual style. I'm pretty happy with the way this came out.
Start to finish on Adobe Photoshop. Took about 18 hours total.

Woah. Ya know, when I first saw this I immediately thought 'Babylon 5', mostly cause of the window and how he was dressed, but then I did fullview and it obviously wasn't, but still so so beautiful! The background is the best!

Ooh, yeah. I have a graphire 4 as well, a small 4x5 one that I use for travel since my intuos is a little too large to fit conveniently in a backpack. It's nice too. They feel slightly different though. Each has its advantages.

It seems incomplete to me. Well...maybe not incomplete so much, but as though it should be part of a series. It looks to me as though he's in a ship of some sort traveling toward the city. And the look on his face suggests a pause in conversation. It seems as though it's part of a story. I really love it, too. ^_^ I like to bright specks of light that are the city.

Wow, you are able to get in so much more detail and realism when you use a photoref. As if your normal stuff weren't enough. The skin texture is really on par with photorealistic artists out there!
