I think I messed up the hair pretty bad(as I thought I would). But maybe it isn't as bad as I thought. Tell me what you think

Incredible job. He's very hard to draw, as I'm discovering myself, but you've captured him perfectly. Amazing work.

How do you manage to draw every character I like? I actually love the hair, and I'd love to be able to draw it as well as you T_T

Very nice.... the one thing that helps me with hair that I was taught was to think of hair in blocks of values.... towards his part where it's darkest, squint your eyes and see the shape of that darkest value.... sketch it in lightlly, to that with the darkest, middlel and lightest values in the hair, shade accordingly and then add your texture.... different things work for different people, try it on a separate piece of paper first so you can see it before you do it on your actual piece of art. Hope this helps...it's all trial and error, and we learn from our mistakes!! Good luck, I look forward to seeing it finished!

Wow, this does look really good. The resemblence is awesome - I could reconginize that it was Anakin even from the little thumbnail. His face is very nicely proportioned, and his features are very accurate to Hayden Christenson. The eyes and eyebrows really stand out to me, and I think the hair looks fine.

The only thing that I think could be improved in this piece is the shading. It looks awesome in the eyes and eyebrows because the contrast is so intense, but there's really not a lot of darker values in the piece, which kind of make it fade away into the background. I think if there was some of that really dark value in the piece, maybe in the lips, ears, and hair, it'd help make this look a little more vibrant. Also, the background kind of takes away from the piece since it's pretty much the same value as his face - I think making that darker would also help make this piece pop.

All in all, really great work - You can capture faces wonderfully, and you do have some really great shading. Keep up the wonderful work!

- Ashley

Very good work on the face and the expression (well, Hayden Christensen has few expressions in the movie) and also the hair looks amazing. But I think we need to see more clear sections in the draw, more...white zones that are the reflections of the skin.

I don't think the hair looks bad at all. It looks like it has a bit of gel or sweat in it. The only beef I have is with his left eye. It kind of looks like he has eye shadow on. Maybe a bit too much shadowing. But overall I think it is great!

Amazing job as I figured you\'d do.

Like I said, the intensity of his character that you captured is great. The eyes especially. And the smooth shading. I really don\'t think the hair looks bad. Spiked hair is very VERY hard for me, as well as curly afros (as I recently found out). But it looks nice and defined, alot like his real hair......almost with a \"fluffy\" look to it lol.

This is great.

No way! I especially like how you did the hair in the back. Only the hair directly above the right eye bothers me.
Overall, this is amazing!

Looking closely at the hair, it's not that bad -- you might just have had a photo reference with a weird set of shadows. I'd expect even spiky hair to have more clumps though and defined shadows near the roots. It's clear you're following hair direction, but all I can think is that you were drawing lines to show directions of hairs that came out darker than they showed in the photo, or didn't darken enough around the base of them to show where the clumps separated. I'd have to see the photo reference to be able to suggest how to improve it, but hair tends to go more in masses and shapes than individual hairs.

The direction of the strokes defines the individual hairs more by implication than directly. This portrait, it looks as if you drew many hairs base to tip instead of fading off as they approach a highlight.

One trick in graphite is to do the hair as a smear in the dark or middle dark tone, then pick out the highlights by erasing with the corner or edge of a hard white rubber eraser. Then detail the darkest shadows at the roots with short feathering strokes over the smear-texture, doing dark and light on a middle tone.

Or you could try doing this kind of hair on a midtone paper and using both white and graphite together to render it. That worked well for me back when I did fan portraits. Good resemblance, by the way, you caught the character well.

As for the background, I agree, a smudge would've worked better than something that showed strokes. Also when I did strongly highlighted subjects sometimes I did backgrounds as a gradient, darkest away from the light and brightest in the direction the light comes from. Using indistinct dark and light shapes to help define the face can make a background more lively without distracting from the portrait.

The backgound I think would look better as a smoothe shade that was smeared..Meanwhile the hair isnt that bad. His hair always looked spiked up and sort of funky anyway...Ah yes and there is that glimmer of a evil past.

Tre-frickin'-mendous! Definitely one of the best Star Wars fan art sketches I've seen. Very nice job! His expression really captures spirit of the character's history and dark future.
