Description Otora-gitsune (おとら狐): Otoragitsune first appeared after the Battle of Nagashino (長篠の戦い; 1575 on Shitarabara area near Nagashino Castle in Mikawa Province). In the tale, the fox used to be the messenger of the Inari Shrine at Nagashino Castle (長篠城の稲荷社) but because of the battle, the castle along with the shrine was burnt to the ground and and the fox was hit by bullets which made him lose one eye and one leg. After the battle, people never rebuilt the shrine and soon it was forgotten. The fox became to hate human and sought his revenge from people who lived nearby. He first possessed the daughter of a wealthy family, called "O-Tora" which was where his name came from. Otora-gitsune possessed many people, causing troubles everywhere, he visited. The victims exhibited few typical signs; suffering one eye and one leg, just like where the fox was hit by bullets. Some victims were told to leave their town and traveled deep into Mount Akiha (秋葉山 in Shizuoka prefecture) to find Yamazumisama (山住様) for help. The Yamazumi Shrine there was famous for the deity of the wolves which the fox was terrified of. One of the endings of the tales, said that after Otora-gitsune was exorcised by Yamazumisama, he traveled to the north where he was accidentally killed near Sai River (犀川 in Nagano Prefecture) by a hunter but the fox possessing and mischief around there seemed still to continue after his death.

Gorgeous drawing and fox!

His story is very interesting too! At least he's still around doing some mischief even after his death.

Hoho. This is the story I heard for the first time. "Otora" protected Nagashino Castle. When the castle is no longer, he would have been very regrettable.
Now change the shape, I'm glad to have been enshrined in the shrine. Even now, he would have me to protect this area. Noble and sad feelings are expressed in your pic, and it is wonderful.

Thank you very much for liking this artwork. This story is rarely told and quite difficult to find the original sources.
There are many interesting stories related to fox like Soutan-gitsune (宗旦狐) from Kyoto. I think I'll draw and write about him soon. Do you know this one?

It is my pleasure. My friend.
I do not know. The story of a male fox is almost unknown.
I think there are many Japanese who do not know.

I love fox stories in Japanese Mythology.

But you have to feel bad for the Fox here.

Me too.
There are many fox stories and many of them end up tragically. I will try to find more stories related to fox soon.

This is absolutely gorgeous The details, the story and the concept of how you turn these tales and famous myths and folklores into images is astonishing Absolutely beautiful. I have seen many Japanese tales and stories that the fox plays an important part and often as a good spirit. I never knew it also had a tragic story as well ;_; . Nevertheless, the artwork is so beautiful and thank you for spending time making these astonishing pieces and enriching our knowledge about Japan's ancient myths and stories.

Thank you so much! (*v*)
I'm so happy that you like this story. For me, this story is quite sad. Many Japanese tales have sad ending but I think they teach human something like wars are always from human's selfishness and human are a forgetful living being. Don't you agree?
Anyway, I'll try to find more unique stories to write here. Have a wonderful weekend!

I agree with you. The majority of Japanese tales which end in tragedy show that the character or characters turn into demons, Yokais, vengeful spirits, or other fiends. Interesting enough, when you dig into these character's backgrounds, the reason they become like that is due to death -- often caused by other humans -- departing them quite soon from their loved ones which makes it tragic . Nevertheless, absolutely love your beautiful artworks and wishing you a wonderful week ahead

Yeah...From what I know, I don't think Thailand has any fox as well XD It's too hot here. But I have seen some red foxes before when I lived in Germany.
