Tako (たこ): Tako is the name of a youkai from an old tale in Kanagi Town (金木町), Aomori Prefecture (青森県).

Long ago, there was a young blind man with shamisen who was traveling to another town. On the way, he was stopped by a sound of an old man telling him not to across the forest after sunset because of danger. But the young man answered, "There is no night and darkness for the blinded man, so let me pass here", and then he continued to walk. Not long, the coldness of the night had finally made him decide to rest in a vacant building, he found accidentally. To let himself forget the loneliness at night, he started playing his shamisen and singing. When the song was over, a gentle voice of a young woman asked him to sing it for one more song. He sang as she wished. The young woman asked him to sing again and again, until daybreak. Before she disappeared, she told him, "I'm Tako who lives in this mountain. Don't tell anyone or your life will be forfeit."

The next day, the young man arrived to a village and visited a liquor store. The owner of the store came to talk to him and then he asked him where he stayed last night. The drunk young man forgot the promise, he had made with a mysterious young woman. He told the owner that he stayed in a vacant building in the forest and was asked to sing songs all night by a young woman, called 'Tako'. He suddenly died after finished the sentence. Then a woman in beautiful kimono appeared from no where with disappointed face. She said, "In the past, I killed everyone who saw me in instant, except this man who has beautiful voice. But...In the end, he did break our promise and had to die like the others." She warned the villagers if they told anyone about what they saw here, they would also die like this man and same to this village, would turn to be a lifeless swamp.

The villagers decided to gather iron bars to make a fence block a way back to the forest at night. Tako sensed that the villagers up to something, so she appeared again but this time she couldn't return to the forest because of the steel fence. When the day came, Tako finally died and transformed back to her true form which was a 'snake'.

In alternative tales, Tako was said to be a deity of the mountain and some believed her true form be 'octopus', instead of snake like in the other tale.
