Description Oh god, I'm obsessed about this game right now. Picked it up in November and love it. Honestly the thing is currently in my top 10 now, and I'm not even done it. >.<

So how would I rate it? Well, if I was rating gameplay (awkward), graphics (ps2 era with ps1 moments), sound (same 5 sounds for every monster, volume randomly changes) and Music (only 4-5 songs really, for a 20+ hour game) I would give it a 2/10, being generous.

HOWEVER- If I rate it on my actual enjoyment of the game, and the amount of times I've laughed out loud because of the awesome script? 11/10

GAME OF THE YEAR, EVERY YEAR.
Fuck you Silent Hill. You've let me down to many times. Francis York Morgan is the new man. I even changed my Avatar to him.

SO SAYS MR. STEWART.

And Michael Tillotson is fucking hard to draw correctly.

Ha, figgin' hilarious! I love it. I could honestly see Micheal saying that if he was having a bad day. I have to say though, I did enjoy the PS2-like graphics of Deadly Premonition; they gave the game a nice homey feeling and brought back a few good memories of pwn'ing on the PS2.

I agree with that- but in the world of modern era games many people place way to much emphasis on "pretty" and let it hamper their actual enjoyment.

I agree with that as well. Everything is just all about graphics now. I don't care about game graphics myself; the only thing I look for is a good story, which Deadly Premonition most definitely had.

I agree with the statements about the graphics as well! High fives all around!
I gotta say, this game has become one of my favorites despite all the flaws it has in gameplay & sound design. Somehow it holds a very special place in my heart. Or something along those lines.

lol we'll see if the new one caters to those who liked the Psychological horror aspects, or the new retarded fanbase. =/

I'm strangely part of the two categories, so I'm sure to like it either way. :] But the quality of the game really depends of the point of view... for example, did you liked Silent Hill
Shattered Memories? 0:

And Silent Hill will always be in our hearts.
So says Mr.Stewart.

halmtier In reply to ZeTrystan [2011-02-01 03:42:06 +0000 UTC]

I didn't really like shattered memories. The idea and so on was good, but the execution wasn't. Once you learn that Nothing will hurt you when there isn't frost on the walls, the game lost 90% of it's creep factory. It was a security blanket- I knew that no matter how it looked and how much they tried to fool you, nothing could harm your character.

ZeTrystan In reply to halmtier [2011-02-01 13:09:02 +0000 UTC]

That explain pretty well your point of view. You seem to prefer to be an actor in the action of the game, but you also want the game to offer you the scariness. On that point, Shattered Memories is very similar to the first Silent Hill, because the fear is most of the time caused by something that does not truly exist (sounds, most of the time).

But SHSM wasn't supposed to be a scary scary game. They were touching a new audience by selling it for the Wii, so they skipped this part to concentrate in the psychological aspect of the game! d:

And, to finish, the fact that your character can never be truly harmed is clearly linked with the ending of the game.

But you still can not like it! x] I'm just suprised you don't like it as much as Deadly Premonition because they look a lot alike: badly done in the execution, gooooooood story and characters.

halmtier In reply to ZeTrystan [2011-02-01 21:17:32 +0000 UTC]

The first silent hill still had moments that broke the whole 'silence' barrier, making me never quite sure about my safety. For Survival horrors, I like them to have good plots that once can analyze, A lack of reliance on jump scares and more usage of emotional scarring, as well as characters I can care about.

As for Deadly premonition? I don't see it as a Survival horror. I see it more as a Mystery Drama just because there are almost no moments that I could call 'scary' in the entire game. XD

ZeTrystan In reply to halmtier [2011-02-02 02:14:04 +0000 UTC]

Well, isn't SHSM a little bit like that? x) Anyway...

Let's be sincere: there's absolutely no scary moment in this game. But I don't know why, it's still awesome! d:

Yeah, I think I jumped more from finding odd shit in peoples wardrobes by being stupefied than jumping at any of the actual 'jump' moments. XD

So says Mr. Stewart. I agree with you 100% about this game. The graphics weren't spectacular but this game is a great example of how a game doesn't need spectacular graphics and can still be the best game I've played in a long time. I am constantly giggling at this game!

I need to write down all the ideas as I play the game. I take too long drawing, but at least I'll have a list to start off of. Besides, I still need to get the achievements on Normal and Hard mode.

Haha, I just kinda doodle on whatever and turn it into a drawing later.
I still need to draw my frustration with those wall walkers and how the Guitar is the only way to kill them without wasting 10 minutes.

ilikebeingevil In reply to halmtier [2011-01-31 15:49:39 +0000 UTC]

The flamethrower is a good way to take care of them too. It's a tad longer than the guitar, by a tad I mean about 10 seconds. Of course, had I known that the guitar was so useful, I wouldn't have gotten it so late and given it away so quickly. Just means I should give it a chance in another playthrough

The first dungeon you see those things in there are about 6, 7 events with them. I didn't have anything with me by a pipe and the FBI standard. DX

I accidentally found out about missing events by being a minute late for one. Rather than sleep, I decided to go side quest hunting and found the first Spiritual Map. So I was fortunate enough to have a couple infinite weapons when I fought the first one, though the shot gun is close to worthless...

I'm thinking of replaying some chapters to get the Radio. I tried just after the 3rd murder, and all George does is tell me his mother is sick and to never come to his house. I did the pre-quest with his work out weights, but I can't get him to start that friggin radio quest! I even have the flower already.

The only way you can trigger that event, if I recall correctly, is if you go to his house at night - 9 ish, I think - and it has to be raining. Hopefully he'll speak to you a bit more. The hardest one I thought was Emily's. Have to have specific ingredients, be during a specific time, and it has to be raining. York was cursing the sky with his smelly suit...

halmtier In reply to ilikebeingevil [2011-02-02 02:16:15 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I did everything all the walkthrough's said, (go just after 21:00, clear day, under specific chapters) and still nothing. DAMNIT.
Meh, I want to replay some to get the Inf. weapons anyways, so no big deal. Luckily I have no key items in my inventory- I heard you can lose them and be forced to restart the game if you replay chapters while holding them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ilikebeingevil In reply to halmtier [2011-02-02 16:13:29 +0000 UTC]

The only key item you should worry about is the other 'squirrel key' you get later in the game. Have that in your inventory but restart another chapter? That's a guaranteed game breaker from what I read. The only way to fix it is to completely restart the game since the item itself permanently disappears.

I'm pretty positive you have to visit George at night while it is raining, not on a clear night.

You can replay some of the Other Worlds and get a couple Inf weapons, they're located at about the end of the dungeons. The best one is Galaxy of Terror, where you get the Inf assault rifle (aka stronger submachine gun). There's also the Spiritual Maps that are sold at the Milk Barn. I don't think I've ever used a weapon that required ammo...

halmtier In reply to ilikebeingevil [2011-02-03 04:59:26 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I have a small list of where to get things. I'll be replaying some areas and opening old chapters to get quests done. I'm almost at the part where I get the second squirrel key again, so I'll do it before getting the item.

ilikebeingevil In reply to halmtier [2011-02-03 05:58:43 +0000 UTC]

Alrighty, just letting you know when you restart a chapter, the only way to save is to get to the chapter's end, so no phone saving. I didn't know that, and I was all wft-ing
