yes and no.....
If you have the room to set one up it is is a lot cheaper then hiring a studio long term but you have to invest in lighting and studio equipment like a background kit and rolls of seemless paper to set it up properly.
So you can spend a lot or a little depending on the quality of the equipment you purchase or if you can buy second hand etc.
Some universities may have cheap studio space for students to hire or book or you might be able to get discounted student rates at some major photography studios as well ring around and see what you can find out and good luck with it all

Although I think this is very beautiful, I'd also like to see it a bit bigger as well. And why is the resolution of this piece so small in the first place? Is it because you wanted to protect it from the art thieves, or is there something else?

I don't personally see a need for posting high res images on line when im not selling prints...
I do keep my jpegs small but they look fine to me? for the reason you suggested u would be amazed how many seem ignorant of copyright laws or simply choose to ignore and take...
