Description =======================================
Spinosaurus the largest known predator ever walked the earth. It was larger than both Tyrannosaurus and Giganotosaurus. (13-18m in length)

It might have been a predator but I like the theories that suggest that it was a piscivore (fish eater)

My 3D model is based on Scott Hartman's SkeletalDrawing.

The fossil:-

=======================================
First, I created the entire fossil in Maya then modeled that body over it, used ZBrusah plugin UVMaster for UV mapping, also used Zbrush for details, displacement and normal maps, Mudbox&Photoshop for texturing and finally got it back to Maya for some Vray\Mray scenes. and ofcourse some Photoshop for texturing and post work.
=======================================
The scene is 95% 3D

Nice model and composition! I think you should pay more attention to the dinosaur skin. Yes, and it would be nice to add the water splash near his leg.

Thanks mate! I've been a fan of your work before you join DA, I guess I first saw your model on Youtube. I'm trying to figure out the secret behind the beauty of your models.
I wonder where most of your details come from? Zbrush maps or the diffuse textures? And on Zbrush how many polycounts you end up with? Do you use normal maps or bump maps? I usually use normal maps and my diffuse textures are all colors no skin details. I also find it hard to control my specular map especially when I use the detailed normal maps, it makes the model looks more like a rock, only when I used SSS on my Giganotosaurus the spec seemed to be more natural and the normal map's details faded a little. Sorry for asking too much but I always wanted to ask you about your methods.

Swordlord3d In reply to HANxOPX [2011-07-20 12:40:40 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
Well, usually I don't count the polygons in ZB but I can tell you that almost always I stop work on 7th subdivision.
For details I use normal map+displacement. And I try to add a lot of small things to diffuse map too. I don't use SSS because I render with Vray but I hope to learn Mental ray in nearest future.

I find Vray easier and more user friendly, the only problem in Maya I didn't know if it was fully supported when it comes to the subdiv approx. feature, displacement mapping and normal mapping. This was my Giganotosaurus on Maya Vray [link] and this is on MRay [link] and finally Mray with SSS [link] Besides this I think Vray 2.0 is out maybe I should give it a try.

I haven't use Vray for Maya but my friends told me that latest version works fine.

but ima try and give some constructive advice xD
The textures on this one are much better than on the t-rexym good job
the fin, or whatever it has on its back looks too soft, not bony enough
otherwise I dunno what to say xD
