I absolutely love this because it's a lot more realistic to his mythology than what they did in the movie, and in this design he lacks that 'round-mentor-not-a-love-interest' look. I would have liked a design similar to this a lot more, because it would have made the movie a lot better to him look like this and then have Moana and him part ways a nothing more than friends.

I like your depiction of Maui. In the movie he looks nothing like what he actually depicted as in the Mythology. I think Disney did that so people wouldn't try to sexualize the relationship between Maui and Moana. Cause the movie is basically about Moana trying to find out who she is.

When I was watching the movie yesterday, my mind mentally replaced Maui's movie design with your Maui design. I mean, in the Polynesian myths he's typically depicted as being in his late teens-early twenties, slim/lithe/strong handsome demigod. So yeah while I liked his personality, since it matches the whole kindhearted trickster demigod, I really didn't like the way Disney designed him.

Well the way that you drew him is the way he's portrayed in Polynesian Mythology, so I was rather annoyed with his design in the movie.

Yeah, I based him off the myths I heard when I was in hula, plus their really early concept arts, so I see that. I kind of liked his design tho

I liked it as well, in the movie he looks pretty cool. But it annoyed me that they designed him with the typical round short leg and arm design of sidekicks, and 'superman/hercules' look, and people said it was pretty insulting to polynesian people by having him look 'obese'. But he's not obese in the movie, it's pretty clear that most of his design is muscle.

He's a confirmed character, and he is the demigod, Maui. In many Polynesian legends (it varies between Hawaiian, Samoan, Tongan, Tahitian, etc.) he was the one that lassoed the sun to slow it down and make the days longer, he is known for fishing out the Hawaiian islands from the ocean with his magic hook, and he is also known for giving fire to the humans.
So yeah, he's pretty important
