Well, it depends on how old you are. I'm a shelter volunteer and I don't recommend parents get ferrets for their kids unless the parents are willing to do a hefty part of taking care of them. Ferrets are a lot of work, they need playtime outside of their cages for at least four hours per day and they don't use the litterbox as well as cats do. Basically this means a lot of high energy, high speed chases, cleaning poops out of corners, and making sure that the controller for your XBOX isn't sitting within reach. All furniture should be pushed away from things they can climb onto because should you have a drink or something on an endtable or coffee table that is within jumping distance from the couch... say goodbye. Also, ferrets have a lot of health problems, so you probably shouldn't get one unless you have about a grand in the bank as an emergency vet bill fund. They are extremely prone to 3 different types of cancer in their older years, Adrenal disease, Insilunoma and Lymphoma. All of which require at *least* monthly veterinary attention.
I'm sorry, I know this is not what you were looking for, but as a Ferret Rescue volunteer it is my job to educate people about the "ugly" side of owning ferrets because when people only consider the fun and cute things about getting them, it becomes the reason we see so many dumped on the shelters once it is discovered the ferret is not as much fun as it is work.
They can make wonderful pets if you can take all of this into serious consideration and be willing to do the work. The love and laughter you will get out of their short little lifespans (6-8 years) will provide you with endless fond memories, but there are a lot of dark and difficult parts, too. If you think you can handle those, then perhaps a ferret is right for you. If you can't, consider a dog, cat, or hamster.
