It's a common ending in Japanese female names. Japanese fans tend to give genderswapped male characters nicknames like Naruto-->Naruko, Sasuke-->Sasuko etc.

There's a character in the manga (still not appeared in the series)called Emporio Ivankov, who has the Horu-Horu no Mi (Hormone-Hormone Fruit) which allows him tur change almost EVERYTHING about a person (hair/skin/eye color, size/weight or even GENDER) So this "female-Luffy" trend has become a fan-possibility as of late...

Oh yes, I know, of course I'm up to the latest chapter with the manga. The idea for this came from an april fools joke on Arlong park forums when they created fake spoilers of Ivankov turning Luffy female, thus making female Luffy "official". Many people were disappointed when the spoilers weren't true...
