Thanks, it's been suggested that the Narcissus doesn't properly launch at all, but merely ignites it's retros once dropped from the Nostromo, allowing the Nostromo and refinery to speed on their way (the forward braking engines are shown to ignite but this seems to get confused with forward lights coming on). Later when the alien attempts to enter through one of the nacelles and Ripley fires up the main engines the Narcisuss is set back on course for Earth - through the debris - such as it is - of the refinery. Which makes sense.

All the shuttle had to do was slow down; the Nostromo was already going faster than light speed, so once the Narcissus slowed down even just a bit, the speed of the Nostromo would speed away.

I still don't know why the thing was launching backwards.

I reckon it might have been based on probably reality - in that a shuttle would launch with smaller rockets just to get away from the bigger ship (hopefully with more than 30 seconds to spare) and then once set on course for home go to the main rockets - a way to save wasting fuel. Or, could be to give Ripley a prime view of the destruction through the front view port. Or, so that when the alien tries to get back on board via the engine narcelle the main ignition is all the more dramatic.
