"Good morning, Bulldog," said the honeyed tones of Miss Smith. "I trust you slept well."

Bulldog ignored her, continuing to tense his muscles against the manacles. "As you can see," continued Miss Smith, "you are facing an experimental new device. We have nicknamed it the Brainworm. It drills through your skull and inserts a microscopic device into your brain. Once there, it controls all your functions. You become in effect a living automaton. You will be our secret weapon. Everything you already know will be ours, and then we can send you back into the field to destroy all our opposition."

"I hope you enjoy your new toy," muttered Bulldog.

"You're only the second person we've tried it on. The first, shall we say, encountered a few problems. Still, we've cleaned it up and refined the process. The unfortunate side effect is you will cease to exist as a person, but we can't have everything, can we? And some of us would gladly sacrifice your dour personality if we could keep the body."

Lights flickered on as the sinister device came to life. "I'm afraid this will hurt you more than it will me," sighed Miss Smith. "Goodbye, my dear Bulldog."

Bulldog watched as the machine started to move into position, its arm, which ended in a tiny wicked drill bit, extending towards him...
