Part of being a documentary photographer is a quick eye for the interesting and then a quicker ability to find a place to park. Often the streets are busy where you find inspiration.

I was going east to west on a major road in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA when passing this group I knew there was a photo there. Quickly parking in a fast food chicken shack, I went back to the three. They were still hanging out, I let them know what I was doing and they went back to their busy lives, while I began mine.

I took five images. This was a difficult decision to make over which of the images taken best represented the feel I was going for. In two the background ruined the image, although the angle was great. In others, the way they were looking interfered with my intentions of the casual, hanging around, attitude. In this particular image, each was looking in their own direction, in their own world yet the man on the left was checking me out, which worked for me and the reality of the scene.

Taken with my Leica M2, with 50mm F2.0 Summicron, on Kodak Tri-X panchromatic black and white film., in the mid 1970s.

On the way out I bought some nice fried chicken to go.
