Description I've been snowed under with Uni work, so The Edition is coming along slowly, but i felt an urge to draw this today, and forced myself, thanks to several cups of tea, to draw.

All characters are from Scandinavia and the World, a webcomic by humon , i don't own them ect, ect.

Its a known phenominon in England that we are sh*t at football, especially compared to everyone else.
Yet - without any logic, every time England are involved in a big event (like the world cup) or any time the England team does something REMOTELY non-bad (like get picked out of the random draw to get into preliminaries) the England football fans arise.

Painted faces, screaming their drunken tone-deaf battlecry, the Vikings of the modern age.
We loose 99% of the time - but they still exist, and frighten the crap out of weedier people like me.

Your not that bad, compared to us Canadians. I mean, in between hockey, hockey, curling, beating our own world records in hockey, hockey, dying in pain as somehow a Canadian NHL team has not won the Stanley Cup in 18 years, hockey, and hockey, we are way too busy to be practicing football/soccer. After all, we suck at it-big time. There is just too much snow! But snow soccer/football is fun. Really fun.

True
But at least you guys have hockey & stuff to enjoy, football is like our main/only sport.
Other than cricket, but only the upper-class folk tend to go to that.

Not true, I've been to England (actually, I am English, since I have my English citizenship), you have CHOCOLATE that tastes really good, for you to eat! Plus, you guys are awesome at horseback riding, your SAS kicks-ass, and you have only ever been invaded, like, 5 times! And look at all that sand you've got, make a really weird sand-castle!
And hockey is practically our only sport, there are riots in Vancouver, British Colombia right now because the Vancouver Canucks lost 4-0 to Boston! And Boston are the thuggies! We riot, because a team lost a hockey game, how pointless is that?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HarryBentley In reply to CastawayWish [2011-06-17 09:50:28 +0000 UTC]

Ah, the Canucks thing... I've heard of that.
Ok, I'd say for hockey reactionists you guys are a bit above our football reactionists.

And yes, our chocolate is good You don't tend to realise it until you try American chocolate but yeah - MASSIVE difference.

I've learned through these comments that England is the only country where the English football team is viewed as crap, in others we're meh-to-good.
Weird really, we're out own worst critics

CastawayWish In reply to HarryBentley [2011-06-17 20:38:26 +0000 UTC]

Basically, yeah. However, we aren't that bad, you see, in 1994, the Vancouver Canucks were in the final game again, and it was at home. They lost, and somehow it started a riot. So basically, it's kind of a tradition. Also, a Canadian team has not won the Stanley Cup in 18 years. So, basically, we just lost it. We could not stand not having the Stanley Cup. And that makes no sense, does it?

This is hilarious. xDD

But I have to disagree that you're shit at football (you're currently sharing the lead in your group for Euro 2012). I also find it hard to believe that America would be able to lead 4:0. xDD Was that an actual game or did you make up that result?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HarryBentley In reply to Numbuh00 [2011-06-12 17:05:08 +0000 UTC]

We are normally very bad at football (the vastest majority of the time) especially when compared to other countries.

The America thing was made up, i found it hard to believe that America would take an interest in television that didn't involve itself (America somewhat lacks world news)

The only football I've seen America play was against Germany - yeah... Germany sure know how to kick ass

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Numbuh00 In reply to HarryBentley [2011-06-12 17:23:16 +0000 UTC]

On the FIFA ranking, Englad is number 6 out of 202 countries. I'd say that's pretty amazing.

Oh, yeah, Germany definitely rules when it comes to football. And don't even get me started on Spain. I think America does pretty well in football too, considering it's not exactly popular in the states. But I'm sure if there was an England/America match, Englad would win.

Awesome!
I can feel your pain, in Brazil we are almost like that, except that we used to win some matches (football here is getting worst every year u.u)
It is strange…we don’t see England’s football as been that bad… Well at least until that game against Germany on the World Cup last year xD
(and sorry about my english ><)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HarryBentley In reply to Choko-s [2011-06-12 17:07:09 +0000 UTC]

Its fine
Brazil have more to gain from football though - and your team tends to do well I thought? So at least you have more excuse to get exited about, right?
Perhaps its the English negative melancholy attitude to everything that makes us view ourselves as bad. But its a stereotype we hold for ourselves for 95% of the year.

During the World Cup in Germany the train was overcrowded by drunk English fans and Frankfurt ran out of beer. XDD I can totally understand how you came up with this comic.

In South Africa it was funny that the keeper lost the ball. But actually it's a good team.

Nice idea.

>Sigh< English football fans are indeed one of the many things that keep me from being "proud to be English". Disgraceful behavior... Only for football strangely - I have never seen it happen in Badminton.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

0xymora In reply to HarryBentley [2011-06-12 15:18:57 +0000 UTC]

Probably because less people watch Badminton.
Sometimes I've got the feeling that most people don't like football itself, but the feeling of togetherness.
I can only talk about Germany now: Of course Humon is overdoing it, but indeed Germans don't wave their flag - except when watching football - and even in my circle of acquaintances there are only three (including me) people who know the text of the the German anthem (because we only sing it when it comes to sport). Though the reason for this is (as we sometimes joke): We fear to be bombed as soon as we start singing the anthem and waving the flag. Therefore football is the only chance for Germans to show they DO have solidarity. (In most of the others sports we loose, as soon as we win there too, we have a short hype.)
Than football is a game everyone can play. You only need to define the playground and where the goal is (with stones for example) and something one can kick (which needn't be a ball). There isn't any other team sports that is this simple. And voila, you have a mop of people who are cheering for a group of millionaires kicking leather. XD
Btw: I am interested in football.

There is another time when people start acting disgraceful. My friend described it as the transformation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hide: Driving the car. Sitting in the car some people suddenly turn into rowdies.

Harry just leveled up his knowledge of Germany

Cool Stuff I'd probably take an interest in football more myself if it wasn't for a) the millionares factor b) the 'fans' that spoil it for other people

Then again alot say the same of hyper-violent videogame fans (although those tend to be MASSIVELY minor incidents that are blown out of proportion... then again perhaps both are to degrees?)

0xymora In reply to HarryBentley [2011-06-12 17:40:50 +0000 UTC]

I'm sorry. I just noticed how much I wrote.

I try not to care for those wrong fans, because I don't want them to spoil it.

Hyper-violent videogame fans? I missed something. I only watched a video on youtube about that crazy boy who runs nuts because he can't connect to the CS server. XD

HarryBentley In reply to 0xymora [2011-06-12 18:32:26 +0000 UTC]

Theres the silly internet videos of people breaking their keyboards in frustration, and the News reports of people shooting taxi drivers "because they played Grand Theft Auto". And the Korens and Chinese people who collapse in internet cafes after 24 hours of play and no food breaks (You are in a FREAKING CAFE! WTF!)

But yeah, all those are few and far-between, but very loud stories. Alot like the 'accidents' that happen when the wrong kind of face-painted football viking gets drunk and exited.

0xymora In reply to HarryBentley [2011-07-01 12:23:41 +0000 UTC]

O.o...
That's when people don't know where there is the border between reality and computer/game. It's sad really.

Let's hope that there won't be so many hooligans during the World Cup now. It sounds more peaceful than during men World Cup in 2006, although the fans were really angry yesterday. I watched the game Nigeria vs Germany and the referee shouldn't move around without bodyguards, I assume.

Actually, it was a reference to the web-show 'Is It A Good Idea to Microwave This?' It's exactly what it sounds like (people microwaving things and watching it blow up/make a mess/be boring), but one of the catchphrases of the show is, "The masks! They do nothing!" This was in reference to America's thing with the gun, of course. c:
