Some of the Mexican families in the Southwest have lived there since the 1600s - back when it was part of New Spain. Santa Fe is over 400 years old. Mexico is actually older than the United States.

You have to be here legally as a resident to join the military in the first place. You can also become an Australian or Canadian citizen by joining their military but you have to be a permanent resident first (e.g. you have to move there legally, and have paperwork), and the US, the UK, New Zealand and Ireland (pretty much all the mostly English-speaking countries) have the same rule.
France is pretty much the only country on earth where you can just land, bike, boat, or drive there (even illegally) and join the foreign legion of their military.

Yeah my dad told me about that. He came from Mexico and joined the US army. From there he had to take tests to become a citizen.

Ya it is more complicated than simply join, because if you were here illegally already, it is hard to join in the first place, and then after you are in you have to do a bunch of complicated stuffs to be a citizen. I might do that if I go to get my Phd in another country actually, I am getting my masters here though
