Description I sure hope the edit isn't too bad, all I'm using is Naked Cafe's mspaint program. IMPROVISE!!! Well, if you've seen my last one, the commentary will make a little more sense. This is part 2 of my BIGGEST COMISSOIN EVAR, Greg Graffin of Bad Religion, an 18th birthday comission gift for my friend Derek Headrick. His favourite band is Bad Religion, so I was thrilled to step out of my realm of Industrial and Metal Musicians and take on another totally wicked underground genre: Punk Rock. I was really not too familiar with Graffin, but am very impressed to see that he actually has a PhD in some form of Political Psychology I don't quite care to recall the name of. He's quite outspoken about politican jabber, especially the current war in Iraq. (My kinda guy!!!)
On with the techies: On the line now, but this sculpture basically bears the best hands I've ever made. I can't quite see the image behind this lonely cyber-cafe monitor, but if your image is clearer than mine, you'll notice perfect hand dynamics all around; knuckles, nails, even palm lines. The other little egg lies within the patches on his vest. The top right is obviously 'Bad Religion' printed rather clearly, if I say so myself, the bottom right is an Ace of Spades with a totally deadly Reaper scythe, and, and, AND, best of all...: That little tiny inverted American flag actually has 50 little tiny stars behind the blue. I'm quite proud of this. Thank you all for your patience at my tardiness of updates, I know derffie and sancho-toquito were really itching to see my new material. I hope I haven't let you down.

HA! Right on, man! Thanks a lot. I just left you a really friendly thank you note with a story behind this one.
I wish I still owned it. Like I say in my commentary, this is almost 2 years old now, but even after its time, this piece was a real milestone for me. The arbitrary 'OINT!' Greg is so known for was captured so well, I'm so proud of how his hands turned out.
Thanks a ton, bro! I'm glad you liked this one.

Yeah, I really like them. I don't own any of their albums and know little to nothing about them save for that they're an amazing and widely respected band that has shared a real influence with the world. Thanks a lot!

Nice detail! I heard that Greg is actually writing a book about politics with a university professor. Finally, a modern mainstream PUNK band that know what they're talking about!

Oh, quite a few do. You just don't hear of them too much. I suppose you did say modern, but look into a band called The Angelic Upstarts. Very fun, yet VERY societally outspoken Punk. Excellent Music!

Yeah, derffie rules! Given I've never met him, I can honestly call him a good friend. I actually make it one of my intentions to one day visit him in Cornwall.
And thanks for the extra compliments!

Sorry for the EXTREME lateness of this, I've had almst no time to go online lately.

I'm not trying to lodge my head in your ass with the compliments, by the way. I've always loved your style of art and am floored that you've been in Heavy Metal. I love Heavy Metal so, soooo, SOOOOOOOOOOOO much. Both the music and, in this case, the magazine. 'The Adult Illustrated Fantasy Magazine' at that!

this ones pretty darn good too! hmm! i don't know which one out of these two i like better! but they're both cool!

hatredtheblack In reply to CenobiteTwin [2006-05-22 02:08:31 +0000 UTC]

Well, based on my knowledge of my own skill, they're both great, but this one is ultimately better, if I'm talking about the Greg Graffin (can't tell what submission I'm on) I really feel bad about the Motorhead logo on the other. Sandy loves them, though. I haven't spoken with Derek about them... HOLY SHIT, I haven't spoken with Derek! I better call him...
Thanks, Erica.
PS, I miss you!

Another excellent sculpt. Looks like you have a "look" going on to your work. Keep pushing the boundaries. Are you using a lot of tools? How many do you have. Curious.
I'd love to see one in progress at various stages from you eventually.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hatredtheblack In reply to EricNocellaDiaz [2006-05-22 02:22:17 +0000 UTC]

Yes, YES!!! I believe a 'look' gives a sculpture more of a realistically characterzed feel to it. A stationary, straight sighted sculpture seems so still. I want my sculptures to look like photographs.
I only use sewing and surgical pins to sculpt. The sharp edge helps carve and the flat, rounded head helps mash. I've never needed anything else. When my sculptures were larger, I used to use a match to pound in holes, like the impressions of eyes. My sculpts have gotten so small that surgical pins to all the work.
Thank you again!

Look up Wayne the Dane and order a few of his sculpey spoon tools. Those are practically the only ones I use and a few metal loops you can get from The Compleat Sculptor online. It will help take your work to another level. Trust me on this.

Nice, the head seems a bit big for the body, and this figure seems a tad stiff. You seem to be better at creating female figures than males. *smirk* Anyway, it's good, just a little off from your usual stuff.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hatredtheblack In reply to injectedmisery [2006-05-22 02:26:17 +0000 UTC]

I agree, somehow female forms turn out better. I seem to stick out on sculptures that have something different, something noticable. Females have much more unique bodies, so whatever sticks out sticks out well with me. I guess this is why females are more commonly used as models in visual art.
