You have to try to see it from their point of view. If this dude (in the comic) lives in a world where these creatures are as common as humans, probably have been for centuries, and their societies have developed together, well... they probably just don't care that much about the different looks. Even if you wanna chock it up to just a cultural thing, maybe they simply view each other as "people" aren't are more attracted to each other's minds than the bodies (though the physical attraction is still clearly there because they've been conditioned to accept the differences anyway).
