Commission forEthereal is one of the most beautiful ponies I've ever worked on. ;A;
I tried a TON of new things with this piece; most of it was drawn in Photoshop, which I rarely use.

She specifically asked that it not be commercialized, as it was a commission.
I would never sell any commissions as prints, unless the commissioner specifically requested me to do so.

Disappointing. I understand the whole fair use policy, and that you have the right to copyright it however you please, but this would have made such a great wallpaper, or more. Such a great piece of art, otherwise.

Well considering that this was a commission for someone's original character, and that they requested it be watermarked to avoid precisely what you just listed, I didn't have any control over it.
And honestly, even if I did, I do not approve of most of my art being used for anything other than its intended purpose, and more often than not, my pieces are commissions. Those are not for free use.
If you do like this piece, perhaps I can make up a few wallpapers of canon ponies in styles similar. Please don't think I'm being hostile, I'm just explaining the situation.Β

I'm finding it extremely difficult to appreciate the art of yourself and Haventide's, here, with such a strict dose of "anti-theft" plastered on top of it. Was it really just the result of someone using your image without asking, that's caused you to become like this?
I don't want to sound like I'm scolding you, I'm just genuinely curious. Most artists at least watermark to the side, and often don't care when seeing it used elsewhere. That's just an indication of appreciation, not exactly theft. And if someone actually claims that they're the ones who've created the image instead of you, then it's easy to shut them down and show proof of your work, as well as upload times.
I'm looking through your stuff now (and Haventide's), and what you have is gorgeous.

Blame the thieves who sell OCs as adoptables, the imposters who roleplay as other people's characters without permission, the mindlessly disrespectful people who claim art/characters as their own, because they think they can do whatever the hell they find.Β This isn't just about an "image", like you say, it's about a character, a concept that you've put much effort into visualizing and invested careful thinking to develop.

No one else may "use" it.
Wouldn't you be pissed if some random stranger took something you poured so much time into creating and used it as their own?Β It's plain disrespectful, not to mention upsetting.
Can you comprehend this though? I'm not talking about bases and tracing. Drawing art from scratch takes time and concentration. It isn't something we artists pull out of our arses, as "easy" as it may look.
There is a difference between appreciation and theft (and I sure do hope you are aware of that line).
Appreciation and giving credit is one thing; using other people's personal creations elsewhere without asking, now that's something else entirely: theft, whether intentional or not. But credit does NOT equal approved permission either.Β
Some people seem to be unable to fathom this concept, sadly. Such people are the bane of our lives.

I feel the need to acknowledge the fact that you are lashing out at me, in the sense that I am indeed unrighteous and not at all understanding of your concerns. This is barring the fact that you, as talented as you are, are playing yourself as some sort of special individual, contrasting yourself against me as though I couldn't possibly understand or taste the level of royalty you're at.
This is sounding hostile, because I am offended by your remarks.
The difference between you and I is that it's easy for me to comprehend the concept of trust. Trust is when you don't care for backlashes, or for theft. If somebody claims something of yours that doesn't rightly belong to them, then it's easy to shut them down. It's easy to prove them wrong, and if you have enough of a following, people will naturally accept the fact that you are the original.
Yet, why is it that I don't care if I'm the original, regardless? Contrasting to you, I often submit things I create, anonymously. The very name of this account was something I created on the spot, and it holds no significance to me. And I often see that stuff used elsewhere, and I even chuckle when somebody claims it as their own. It doesn't matter to me. People enjoy it. They don't need to know me.
But that's how I--an individual such as yourself--work.
I also believe that yes, it is fair for you to have claim over your property, that it's not really easy to accept somebody you don't know taking something out of your home, for example. If that is what this is, then so be it. You have worked for it. You have earned it.
Different people work differently. And I accept that, and your method of sharing your work.
But don't you dare tell me what it means to be an artist.
