Description Looking at Tiki artwork I noticed that most of it is really pleasant and calm. The deep sunset, the ocean, verdant jungle. However tiki's themselves seem rather imposing and disturbing. I thought it might be interesting to make something a bit different and go along this theme of fear than the traditional theme of serenity.

Medium: Paper and ink. Lots of ink.

Tools: Brushes, pens. Light 3B pencil to sketch drawing first.

Time: About 12 hours over the course of 3 days.

This is a pretty cool piece, what I like most about it is that you've managed to make it feel really balanced even though it is really asymmetrical. And the subtle bits of blue in there are a really nice touch.

Can't really find much wrong with this image at all... well except maybe that with the placement of the volcano directly behind the tree, it looks like the tree is on fire at first glance.

true. after completing this i realized that it probably would have been better if the volcano was actually taller, looming over everything rather than being directly behind the trees. oh well, nothing can be perfect.

i'm loving this one ever so much, and it has inspired me for something that i'm going to make later.

i was aiming in the general direction but... oh your piece just got my wheels turning in my head. so great, good job.

You have used such a wonderful palette of colours, the piece really stands strong because of that! The objects invoke a very nice emotional response as well, and I feel a binding contradiction between the moods of your colours, and the moods of your objects! Nice work!

Tiki are a little disturbing at times, but I love the air you gave to this piece. Given almost an angry tropical theme, these guys definitely fit! Nice job! I like the little shunken heads on the pike. o.o;

i like the shading and the simplistic, yet vivid color scheme. i think it may look a little neater if you cropped it more on the bottom, but it looks good otherwise.

crop it? where do you think it should be done? maybe crop around the entire edge since i didnt really ink to the edge of the paper? maybe crop it and add a border? what do you think might be best with this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

un-makeup In reply to havocs-edge [2005-01-02 18:44:05 +0000 UTC]

Cropping it all the way around would be the best idea..it would eliminate the ink edge. Also, adding a border could be a good way to make it more "put together" and professional-looking. Just my advice

All that work was definately worth it. You did a wonderful job. I love traditional media, it always has a much more personal feel to it, in my opinion digital works just can't compare.

You did an awesome job on this one, lots of details, and again beautiful bold colours. The colours really give the picture life, they are used well.

Those faces are really scarey. Another job well done, they look so much like those tribal mask things... and they're starting to freak the hell out of me

havocs-edge In reply to SKit-Fox [2004-12-28 18:25:53 +0000 UTC]

haha good! thats the intent, to freak people out a little. the subtle approach to horror works with weird angles and an underlying sense of dread seems to just work so much better than just plain gory or disturbing stuff. i think overall it just works better.

thanks again for the great comments!

amusing or boring. very easy to shock people the first time but after that it just gets old. and sometimes it just is so out of context it gets silly.

im glad so many people are really enjoying this work. i'm glad it turned out the way i wanted it to. thanks for your great comments!

Cool. It always amazes me how much detail is in pics like this. I wish I could do so myself but for some reason, I always draw a blank when I try.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

havocs-edge In reply to furryb [2004-12-29 05:49:21 +0000 UTC]

detail is difficult. basically, i just pretty much do things in layers. get the basic shapes down. then some finer shapes. then little details. then just keep going. it usually takes a long time to do it, like at least 24 hours over 5 days, but that way you get lots of little details like that becasue you keep looking at it and seeing new things.

thank you for the comment by the way!

Hehe, yeah, it does come easy for me. When I get working on something anyways. Most of the time it takes me like 2 weeks to get something done because I only work on things like an hour or two at a shot.

Guess thats the price I pay for having a girlfriend and a full time job.

I'm quite happy with this. Tiki art is quite interesting, but like the description says I wanted to do a more 'gothic' feel with it.

PattyD [2004-12-11 08:57:08 +0000 UTC]

okay, I choose to comment on this one, because I like the shading of this dev best though this is also the real only critique I can give. Mask like this (especially the ones tourists normally get to see) are usually highly polished. This means they have some essential highlights, and in the case of this drawing, those highlights could add a lot to the picture.
At first, I thought the yellow strokes were to represent the highlights, buti they aren't entirely consistent with the lightsource). Either way, red-like highlights, all along the lines that represent the top of a square where the glow from the vulcano could reach would really add to the drawing.

Other then that, keep it up

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

havocs-edge In reply to PattyD [2004-12-14 04:58:36 +0000 UTC]

yeah, i was thinking about adding a few more highlights, but making them subdued. See, these arent masks, they are supposed to be really big Tiki heads. I guess they are a bit exaggerated though. But anyways, Tiki heads are generally kept outside, so they would geta little bit worn from the weather and stuff so I didnt want them too polished.

There probably should be more red and yellow highlights from the volcano outlining the heads. That would not only give the picture higher contrast, but also bring more attanetion to the heads as well.

Thanks for the critique, I'm, always looking to improve

The piece has great composition and is ellaborately coloured. I think you did a great job with the colours of the sky reflectin gonto the water. My only crit is when you post a full view image, make it a little smaller.

yes, i think i need to start doing that. i've been trying to cut things down a little, but they always end up being too big. maybe i need to start croppping stuff.

You have some really great things yourself. Do you do mostly realistic works, or do you try other types? I'd really like to see something different from you. You have some great technique with colored pencils.

Yeh, I am trying out different methods and I want to go into the more fantasy/mystical category and some anthro too if possible.

I am currently working on a painting of a puffin at the moment, but after that I got some interesting things in mind, involving penguins, hats, sticks, diamonds and dogs lol

Thanks for taking time to view my work though
It means alot

Your art would definitely lend itself to anthro and fantasy. It will be a nice change to see something in those categories that isn't some wacky cartoon character.

And thanks for the watch! :hugs:
