Didn't turn out exactly as I'd have liked, but I didn't feel like doing much more to it.

*snip*

The title Ænima (Pronounced like 'enema') is a combination of the words 'anima' (Latin for 'soul', a term often used by Jung) and 'enema' (anal cleansing), hence creating a new word for catharsis: cleansing of the soul.

In Jungian psychology, the feminine aspect of a male that exists in the subconscious mind is called the anima, which appears in the dreams as a prominent female person. It is also the Latin word for "soul" or "mind" depending on context. (For females, Jung said an animus existed, which was instead male.) In the last LA show of the Ænima tour, Maynard says that Ænema is a combination of anima and enema. He refers to a process when someone has an enema and interprets the remains in a way similar to the way one would tea leaves.

The song displays vocalist Maynard James Keenan's disdain for popular American culture, specifically that of Los Angeles. Keenan sings of southern California sinking into the Pacific Ocean after a series of "natural" disasters. Keenan incorporates part of comedian Bill Hicks' "Arizona Bay" routine into the lyrics, telling the listener to "learn to swim, see you down in Arizona Bay." The "arizona bay" lyric can also be seen as a reference to Edgar Cayce's prophecy about California falling into the Pacific Ocean, which was probably the inspiration for Bill Hicks.

Together the two make for an overall theme of spiritual cleansing; to drop all the gimmicks and facades, the festering neon distractions, and return to something more transparent and pure.

Wow, it's amazing how you can get a boring dull photo and turn it into that. You gave the photograph life, a story. I can see a lot of thought was put into this. The grimey destruction this photomanipulation gives off really fits Tool's sound.
