Description Nestled comfortably amongst the soft reeds of Tao Lake’s banks, Vagus sat alone. He lay on his back and was trying tried hard to deal with his despair and troubles on his own. His head was rested back on his arms while he gazed up at the wide blue sky. Vagus breathed deep, allowing the serenity of his home take away the troubles of the day.

Shortly after arriving at Creeping Forest, the Totodile had almost burst into a fit of rage. It was much to Vagus’ frustration that he realised that he had forgotten to take the seeds from Frensel along with the shovel. He looked upon the other teams as they worked as one to bring their treasured forest back to life. The sight made Vagus’ heart sink within his chest. He and his team were not amongst them. It was just him; an absent minded Totodile…deserted by his own team for screwing up.

The thought of returning to the village seemed to agitate Vagus further. His teeth clenched with anger when he imagined the possibility of Mycaelis finding out that he had screwed up twice today. He knew that Fresnel was aware of his stuff up. Vagus could only sit and hope that word of it didn’t reach his brother’s ears.

It was then that he decided to return home. To Vagus, Tao Lake’s waters had become an ocean of his memories. Memories of someone had become special to him. Lifting himself from the reeds, he sat up and looked over the lakes clear blue waters. It was here, in this sanctuary, that his worries and thoughts slipped away.

Vagus smiled and quivered with delight when a good memory passed through his mind. He looked upon the lake’s waters and remembered the Riolu he had pulled from its depths on that early morning those months ago. Vagus sighed and hugged his legs close to his body. He had not seen Leon in a while. Kareena was growing fast, and even Mycaelis was able to admit that he needed Vagus’ help with raising her.

It seemed that the longer that they were apart, the memories would increase in their potency. Memories of Leon, the treasure that he had saved from the depths of Tao Lake. There was much more that happened on that unforgettable day. Gazing into the beckoning waters of the harmonious lake, Vagus’ eye shimmered when he began to recall the day when he became important to someone...

Vagus didn’t know what to make of it. He felt warm and as light as a feather. His head rested on a soft pillow; his body covered up tight in a thick blanket. Vagus’ lone eye was closed as he lay in a world of bliss. Whatever was active of his conscious mind had made him fall under the illusion that he was floating, perhaps even flying through the warm winds of a hot summer’s afternoon. This feeling was soon joined by a throbbing sensation that came from the back of his skull. It was an unusual and unpleasant feeling that forced a low moan to escape him.

With a grunt, Vagus’ lone eye flung open. Upon doing so, the pain that was held at the back of his head burst forth and made the entire inside of his skull throb. With the front of his snout opening, a groan slipped from his front teeth. It was then that he felt something soft and somewhat fluffy caress his right cheek. The feeling was followed by a sudden weight pressing on top of him. Flicking his head to the right to see who it was, Vagus was met by a familiar face. “L-Leon…?”

The Riolu greeted the waking Totodile with a warm smile and a giggle as he lay on top of him. “You’re awake. Hehe…you’ve been out for almost an hour…”

For a moment, the throbbing pain in Vagus head seemed to fade at the sight of Leon. The Riolu’s smile, his soft touch, his warm gaze; they all seemed to be working in combination to ease Vagus’ discomfort. For some reason, he felt totally at ease having the Riolu on top of him. He welcomed the close contact and smiled back at Leon.

Vagus looked around him. It didn’t take him long to realise why he felt as warm as he did. He and Leon laid encapsulated within the green fabric walls of a camping tent. A small lantern nearby bathed the interior of the tent with a warm glow that seemed to bring forth a beckoning sparkle within Leon’s ruby like eyes.

Shifting under the blanket, Vagus ran a hand across his injured side and found that his wound had been covered by a linen bandage. A pang of regret pricked at his heart. He felt guilty and somewhat ashamed that he had tried to push back the caring Riolu. A Riolu that he was now growing to like with every passing moment.

Leon seemed to feel comfortable with being so close to Vagus. Still, the Totodile couldn’t help but notice a tint of uncertainty within the Riolu’s eyes. They seemed to shift away whenever Vagus looked upon them too long. But if Leon was uncomfortable, he certainly wasn’t showing it.The Riolu remained in place and even began to rub Vagus’ cheek. His warm smile was unwavering. “H-how are you feeling, Vagus? Any better?”

“Fine…I guess.” Vagus chuckled. “But my head feels like it’s been kicked by a Rapidash.” Leon’s question seemed to make Vagus drop a certain façade. All his life he had been taught that his pain was his problem. That nobody would care much unless it was something serious. But now, it was okay to admit that things hurt. Leon seemed to be someone that cared, regardless of how bad his pain was.

Vagus’ reply extracted a laugh from Leon. “Hehe…I thought that might be a problem.” With a grunt, Leon slid off Vagus and began to rummage around the contents of a nearby satchel. What he was doing with it was beyond Vagus’ sight. The Totodile felt too tired to roll onto his side to look. Instead, he remained where he was; on his back and staring into the space where Leon’s head had once been.

There was a clinker and a clatter of the bag’s contents before Leon arrived at Vagus’ side once more. The Riolu held a metallic mug in his paw. “Here. Just try and sit up.”

Struggling against the small jolts of pain from his wound, Vagus began to rise. He soon felt Leon’s other paw arrive at the back of his head to support him. The mug was then brought to the front of his snout. “Drink slow,” the Riolu said.

Vagus parted his jaws just enough to allow the Riolu to pour in a mouthful. He swallowed the warm liquid and fought hard to keep himself from gagging on its aftertaste. Vagus was a Totodile usually accustomed to foul foods and drinks. Over the years, he had evolved to become a master of hiding his displeasure.

Leon took the cup away and set it down near the satchel. He kept Vagus’ head raised in his paw and looked upon the Totodile fondly. “That should do it.”

After a brief cough, the smile returned to Vagus’ face. Drawing from his strength, Vagus lifted himself off Leon paw and turned to face the Riolu. “T-thanks…Leon…” he spoke the words as warmly as he could. He hoped that in some way, he could repay Leon’s care.

Leon giggled and looked away, slightly embarrassed about something. “You’re welcome. I-I’m just glad you’re okay.”

His words made Vagus’ heart tingle with warmth. He liked Leon. From the moment that he had pulled the Riolu to the surface, he could not help but look upon him fondly and hold him close when he was unconscious. Vagus was a Rescuer. He had saved dozens of ‘mons before, but there was something different about Leon.

He remembered the worry and panic that had gripped him upon shaking Leon’s lifeless body. He remembered the joy and relief when his waking coughs filled the air. When Leon awakened, Vagus felt part of himself also awaken. It was a part of him that he never knew existed.

Vagus must have been too lost in his own thoughts to realise that he had leaned closer to Leon’s snout. His heart almost jolted in surprise upon realising what his instincts were forcing him to do. With a shake of his head, he cleared away his disorientation. “Oh...erm…s-sorry.” A profound feeling of embarrassment came over him. He pulled back and looked at Leon who sat giggling into a paw that covered his mouth.

The Riolu was giggling into his paw as he cast his blood warm eyes over the shamed Totodile. “It’s okay, Vagus,” he whispered, moving his paw away from his mouth.

Vagus snorted. “N-nah, it’s not. I-I don’t even know if you’re into--”

What came next simply defied Vagus’ expectations. Moving at a speed that put even the fastest of lightning strikes to shame, Leon burst forward and pressed a long and everlasting kiss on Vagus’ snout.

And now we get to this one, the first piece of art I ever saw from you. It showcases what I hope your relationship is like extremely well. The introduction of it is very well paced and very believable, and the whole thing is of course adorable.

I first saw this when I was going through my training in the US military. It helped keep my mind occupied during some of the worst of it, and continued to give me hope. I'll talk a bit more about that in my comment on the last page, but needless to say, I owe a lot to you two. Thanks again, and I'll be sure to keep this bookmarked so I can read through it again when I need it.

I'm imagining that the lantern is actually a Lampent who showed up waiting for Vagus to die, only to have it's meal ruined by Leon nursing him back to health

And now you're thinking the same thing...

But in all seriousness, it's adorable how awkward he is
