Description The barn was rather hot and stuffy at this time of the year, making everyone that much more irritable and petulant. The red dun mare tied in the heavily padded breeding stall shuffled her feet nervously below her.
Over the years, she had grown up and matured from her dramatic, rambunctious nature to a rather docile yet somewhat spunky gal. Yet, even if she was now considered semi-bombproof, the young mare still did not appreciate people stuffing their arm up her rear.

"Easy, easy," cooed Dante at the mare's head, shoving another handful of oats in the feeder located near the Quarter Horse's front. "You're okay..."
"Hm, not too sure about that," quietly replied the mare vet, Dr. Jobin, who was performing the rectal palpation and ultrasounds.
"What do you mean?" curiously muttered Mendoza from over the munching horse's ears.
"Take a wild guess," scoffed the veterinarian. It was now a common and obviously highly cheesy occurrence for people to wittily use that sentence around the red dun mare.
"She's preggo?!" gasped the handler, his eyes protruding slightly in shock.
"No, fool," Jobin grunted, rolling her eyes. "She hasn't been in contact with any stud, tch."
Dante sighed lightly, yet did not quite appreciate the condescending remark.
"She's sterile," added the doctor more seriously, pulling out her hand from the mare and beginning to take off the tail wrap.
"What?" Dante incredulously asked, eyeing the vet in concern and disbelief. "Are you serious?"
"Sure am. Things like this happen sometimes; not that it's common. It's really no one's fault."
"Great. Now, how am I supposed to break the news to the bossgirl about this?" exasperatedly exhaled the young man, leading Guess out of the stall and to her box stall. As he walked, he continued, over his shoulder: "She had plans to breed her to that grey stud, Ramblin Man, was it?"
"Yeah, nice boy.." agreed Dr. Jobin while stowing away her equipment. "So, what do you think she's going to want to do with Guess?"
"No clue. The outriders down at the track were complaining about not really having any decent track ponies, though, so she might be recycled into that," Mendoza shrugged. "Do you think we could use her as a teaser mare, too?"
"I don't see why not," the mare vet answered honestly.

----------

Guess has grown up. Man, this took forever, though. x.x; And, no critique please!

So, yeah. I decided to make her barren, because I'm done breeding anything but my main breeds (Andies, TBs, Hanos, Knabs, PRMs, Friesians, and a few Canadians, Mustangs and Shires.) It's kind of to resist temptation, lol. I'd make her a reiner like daddy, but as I said, I'm done competing in anything but my normal disciplines.

The sidestory doesn't really fit with the image, I know, but it's more just to explain why/how she became a track pony and teaser. She'll now only lead our racehorses to and from the starting gate or work-outs, and part time, she'll be a teaser mare (check the stud's receptivity, help practice, etc.)
What a life. xD

Registered Name: DD Take a Wild Guess
Barn Name: Guess
Gender: Mare
D.O.B.: 23/08/2003
Breed: American Quarter Horse
Bloodline: DD An Educated Guess x Skip's Wild Flower
Phenotype: Red dun
Eyes: Half-blue right eye and dark brown left eye
Genotype: ee / aa / Dd / nZ
Height: 15.2hh
Build: She's an ideal shape for her job as a track pony. Wildly developed hindquarters to ensure speedy sprints to horses in distress, and agile feet to allow for swift spins and turns. She has a fairly short and refined head, with a small, tapered muzzle, smallish ears, wide eyes, a muscular frame, quite broad chest, and on the whole, she's stocky but well balanced.
Breeder/owner/trainer: *Hazel-rah of Double Dance .
Temperament: Matured quite a bit over the years. She's now fairly docile, calm, quiet and obedient. She learns very quickly, and enjoys the track atmosphere. She sometimes can't help but try to be the center of attention, especially when stabled, but when she works, she just loves to trot proudly alongside those tall and lean racers, and best yet, when she gets to sprint up to one to do an emergency stop, or to catch a loose horse, or to assist someone in need. She can go from relaxed and mellow by the starting gate, to full-throttle in a fraction of a second, if asked. Her cue to run all out is "yip-yip". When around studs, she's a total giddy flirt when in season (except undersaddle, evidently), but when she's not receptive, she can be a nasty little bugger. We're trying to train her to accept a stud even when she isn't in heat, and so far she's progressing nicely.
Discipline(s): Western basics, but is actually just a track pony, paddock pal and 'teaser mare' you could say.
History: Born at DD, she was broken in with Western basics/sacking out/etc. It was discovered she was infertile a few years ago, just before she was set to breed with a reining stud, and she has since been trained to become a track pony instead of being sold off (most sterile horses don't stay at DD stables, I can assure you that, lol.) Also, she occasionally gets used as a teaser mare, to help make stallions practice mounting if they don't like the phantom dummy, to help them getting ready for semen collections, or training young'uns to properly mount and whatnot.
Offspring: N/A
Availability: [INFERTILE]

Wonderful story, as always. They always make me laugh. It's really such a shame that she is sterile, I really would've loved to lease a breeding from her, she is such a gorgeous horse.
I really admire your style, not to mention your shading. It always seems so spot on.
She looks so cute with those flowers in her mane.

Haha, but there's no shading here. xD But I guess you mean, in general, when I do shade. Thank you very much! And, yeah, she has nice genes, conformation and bloodlines. But.. c'est la vie!

I really appreciate it! I always wonder if my stories are even read or are worthwhile, so this makes me smile.

Yes indeed. At least she will make a wonderful track pony.

And you're most welcome. I really do enjoy reading your stories. I'm normally excited to see a new piece from you so I can read the story that goes along with it!

Woah, somehow dA doesn't want to show any of your deviations in my inbox o.O

Anyway, I love her and her cheeky look. She's gorgeous and although it's a shame she's barren, it adds to the whole realistic thing you have at DD Track ponies are awesome, anyway - voices of reason amongst those crazy thoroughbreds.
Your humans have improved no end. This guy looks really realistic on her back and I like how you did the legs; they're the hardest part for me to draw.

I'm cursed! As for the human, well it's heavily referenced, too.
Anyway, thank you!
