Omg, you're so good at drawing these horses digitally <3 I love them; they're absolutely amazing! (:
I had a paper horse stable when I was younger; I still have it ^^ Plus I have 5 what we call an notebook stables (: I think the idea is the same with them as with these..

The highlights and shading on the coat are phenomenal, especially at her flank--amazing work!! She looks photographic in many spots, and it makes her motion looks much more alive, like the lights rolling down her coat while she jumps.
(Here in Jakarta, they have little stores where you can buy just about any software out there, including Adobe, for about $6--even the $2000 sets. >.> They are, of course, highly illegal pirated copies. But...boy is it ever tempting...especially since they work so well, my friend's version even gives him updates from Adobe. Anyway, I feel you on the PS need--I finally caved and bought the full real thing. Luckily, Wacom had a 50% discount with the tablet that I also bought, but nevertheless, $350 is still a lot. x_x)

Have you tried GIMP? It's a free download (what's OC?)

OpenCanvas. I haven't got a good view of Gimp, but I suppose I could try it out. It can have transparency?

I use paint.NET, which is like a free version of photoshop. I've just barely started to use it for coloring, but I think it works fairly well. You can find it online if you google it and it's totally legal.

Lol, dont disrespect the Paint Shop Pro. It rocks if you know how to handle it XD Trsut me, I use PSPX and I hate Photoshop. I mean, I'd like a decent version of Photoshop, but the version I have now Elements 1, is shit.

Well, depends on the version that you have
I will tell you now, do not use PSP "soft brushes" unless you want to die and be consumed by your own mind, because that is what will happen to you and your arse You will die.
To just do plain drawing, this is what you do.
1) Open a new document, whatever size you'd like.
2) Lable the first layer you have "white" then fill that in with white
3) Get a new Layer. label that "sketch." and sketch away, sketch, don't line.
4) New layer, call it "lines" or whatver takes your fancy, place this above "sketch", obviously, but dont't do anything with it.
5) Click the resize button (now this is when a screen shot would come in darn handy but because I can't actually access my PSP now, I can't help you with that) but anyway, say your picture is 500 x 700, you would increase the size to 1000 x 1400. When you go back to your drawing, it should hopefully be twice the size.
6) Then get a hard pixel brush and line your art on the "ink" layer.
7) when you're done, make a colour layer under the "ink" layer but above the "sketch" layer. Click the eye sign on your "sketch" layer to make it dissapear and then start colouring on the proper layer.
8) Then do whatever it is you need to do and then resize your drawing back to its original size (but merge the lineart and colour layer first). Then you should have smooth lines and a nice looking picture.
That's how I do all mind
Hope that helped.

Yeah, I know how to sketch and ink, it's just the actual brushes that I don't get in that particular program. I'm downloading CS2, now, so at least I know how that works, lol. I think I had downloaded a PSP photo editing program or something, because it was just ridiculous. I don't know what you meant by "hard pixel brush", but I was using the brush tool, standard settings (100% hardness and density, etc.) and any size I was using, it was almost as if I was using MS Paint, but with slightly more variety of brush sizes, lol.
