Mushrooms feed, so it feels like she's being consumed by something or she is slowly decaying, specifically her mind as the fungus are only depicted on her scalp. The hand gripping her neck seems very ominous, especially when considering her expression and other hand reaching up in apparent distress. The girl herself seems not only distressed but also in shock.
Those were my thoughts when viewing this~ ^u^
