Description She's back! After I decided to start over Wolf Echo from scratch, I was unsure whether I would keep Polaris in the story or not. But in the end, I found a way to make her (and her human friend - reference still to come) important for the plot, so she gets to stay! Though with a few changes.

Polaris is now a Yakutian Laika/wolf mix, and has some dark markings rather than being pure solid white. She is VERY floofy, as you can see above. Her markings are symmetrical except on her face. She sports identical notches in each ear. I really wanted her silhouette to be unique, which led to her rather spiky neck fur. It kind of wound up looking vaguely Pokémon-like to me, but I don't hate it.
Her collar is old and worn and made of leather, and is really only there so people know that she has an owner and isn't a stray. She's trained as a hunting and tracking dog, and can pull a small sled when she needs to.
Her markings are definitely more dog-like than wolf-like, but she does have some wolf-like behaviors, like howling more than barking, a strong pack instinct, and a more independent nature that makes her less inclined to listen to orders from people (the exception being her human partner, Kjell, who is the only human she truly trusts and respects). She's also larger than the average dog, and much larger than the average Laika (female Yakutian Laikas are around 21-23 inches at the shoulder, which needless to say is a good bit smaller than the average wolf.)

In the original version of the story, she was Echo's love interest, but I've decided to remove that from the story and make them just friends. Not every story needs a romantic sub-plot, and I don't want to force anything just because I think I need to.

Polaris is assertive, bold, confident, sarcastic, independent, and incredibly stubborn. She's a scrappy fighter and will willingly face down enemies more than twice her size. She's had to prove herself from a young age - she was always an outcast among other dogs, it was never safe for her to interact with wolves, and even if most people didn't know she was half wolf, they often sensed something different about her anyway. Kjell was the only one who always protected her and had her back 100%. She trusts her instincts first and foremost, and relies on her initial gut feeling to gauge how to approach new situations. If she gets a bad first impression of you, it's pretty hard to change it unless you prove to her that you've gone through a lot of character development. She might forgive a wrong, but she will never forget it.
