Description Now..... THIS is on of my MASTERPIECES! This beauty won first place and Best-in-show at the Mastodon Regional Art\Science fair of 2008, out of 1,800+ entrants. (It's in Missouri, look it up)

The sculpture is about 7in. tall and is made of polymer clay with a metal armature and is painted with acrylic paints. The base is made of leopard wood and a rock. I ended up having to repaint this thing due to a chemistry issue. I sprayed it with a clear gloss enamel and it reacted with the acrylic paint; it never completely dried, remained sticky for weeks. Then I sprayed it with an acrylic clear gloss but the enamel stuff kept leaking through and then it looked like I dipped it in molten plastic. So I peeled it all off, like white glue off your finger tips or rubber cement, and repainted and glossed it with a brush on acrylic gloss.

WARNING!: SCIENCE ALERT!
The real thing (it is a real creature) is less than an inch and a half long. The flamboyant cuttlefish is one of only two known cuttlefish that are toxic. And it's not just the skin or secretions from the skin that's toxic, it's the whole thing! Muscles and all! They don't even know what kind of poison it is. And it really does come in those colors. The yellow and fuchsia on the tentacles flare up and brighten when it feels threatened, and the black and white stripes on the sides ripple down its back. It's SO cool, you gotta see it for your self.

One other weird fact: it doesn't hover around like other cuttlefish. It "walks" along the bottom of the sea floor with its tentacles.

Probably my favorite sea creature, besides the seahorse and octopus. The cuddlefish can hypnotize its prey with a barrage of psychedelic color displays. They are also monogomus.

Yeah, the flamboyant and the broadclub cuttlefish seem to be the most psychedelic.
They don't really have a choice in being monogamous, the male and female always die shortly after mating.

True. I'll bet it's a happy ending anyway.

Congrats on winning! Gorgeous colours, considering what hell you went through with the chemistry. Enjoyed reading the nerd facts, too. I learnt something new today!

Thank you!
I'm actually reattaching it to its base right now. It was twisting around.

Ooh, I saw one of these featured on "Nova" and could not believe how downright cute it was! I mean, the other species of cuttlefish freaked me out but this one is so cute (especially when it "walks" as if on all fours, like a puppy!), it's hard to believe it's a real animal (and a cephalapod, no less) and not, say, a Pokemon.

I saw the exact same thing. It's what inspired me to make this. It's just one of God's neatest creatures, I think.
