Description 2006
Oil on Canvas

I love painting fruit in a fairly clinical, sterile way. No shafts of sunlight or bowls of fruit usually...just the subject for what it is.
I always enjoy eating the fruit afterwards. Freud would love that (Sigmund that is).

For some reason this one's always been my favorite, it just seems to stick with me, I think because of the simplicity of the subject and the brilliant way in which it was done, there must be something for me to learn in this.

Beautifully done. As always.
Why wouldn't you eat such delicious looking beets?

I love your paintings of people, but this painting of Beets just reached out and grabbed me. I love the realistic Beets are Beets way that you painted this, frank, yet also luxuriating in their ... beetness. The hairy little roots, the big root like a rat's tail, and I expecially love the reds and purples that you used, as well as loving the background, the colors cast by the beets.
~shiftinglight has some beautiful still-life paintings - which he later ate for lunch or supper. I love the whole idea of that - making simple beauty a natural part of one's life.
I like your work so much, hope you don't mind if I watch you!

I just love the detail in the roots stemming out from it.

If you paint the food meticulously and eat it afterwards, it's like you've slowly conquered it. Kind of a higher form or hunting for your own food, maybe?
On a side note: Mmm...beeeeets....

lol. Good ol' Freud. XD I love that you don't try to make it better, by say, putting it in a bowl or something. Nice! Just basically cut to the chase. Nice detail! Did you wash them?

Yes, they were washed at that point...

Sorry, that seems like a really dumb question, but yeah....mainly to wonder if the brownish/grayish parts were dirt or something.... XD

Great job on the tones and colors, especially in the broad strokes.

I like the simplicity, it's refreshing to see a still life that doesn't involve the usual cliches like fruitbowls or vases. Nice colours too; although you've used blues and whites in some parts it doesn't come across as 'cold'.

Thanks. I agree about conventional still life work..in fact anything conventional is rather unappealing. I like to examine the food/people/subjects almost clinically...don't know why, I just go with it:>

Very strong work, I'm practiually impressed with the use of colour in the "white" backround

Thanks. yes, white is so very rarely just white...there's always something else in there...

Nice colour, and you even captured the brown "powdery" look beets have to them.
