Role play is basically where you have your chracters, and sometimes you, interact with someone else's. It can be done a few different ways, but the two most common are "story", where you describe everyone's reactions, and "script", which works like this:
Maki: *A 13 year old girl looks around.* ???
Lily: *Glomps Maki happily.*
(You can also put more detail in the reactions and stuff. Or just use the emoticons and symbols. ^///^ )

Notes, chats, and comments/responses like this one. There are advantages and problems with each, though.
Depending on what the other person's schedule is, that usually gives you an idea of which would be best. Comments and replies stay until they're either deleated or replied to. Notes save the previous responses, making them ideal if you want to write a story with a friend, and chats include more then two people.
