I've started working on a short-story set in -- prepare yourselves -- late 18th century Romania (I had to step out of my comfort zone both in time and in place, right?) Meet Amza, the protagonist!

Plot:
The story takes place in the South-West of Wallachia (Țara Românească, as it was called in Romanian) in a chaotic time for the country, as it was the field of many disputes between the Phanariote Greek voivods that ruled it and the Romanian boyars and constantly invaded by Ottoman and Russian forces. Amza is a 30-year-old boyar who commits a crime against his father-in-law and is forced to run away. With the authorities behind him, Amza runs towards the woods south of the town of Craiova where he hopes to meet a famous band of outlaws (called haiduci in Romanian) and join them in their fight against the foreign attackers and the oppressive regime. While on the run, Amza is helped by a gypsy boy named Murgu and his sister Narcisa, who are also hiding in the woods.

Boyar = member of the aristocracy in Slavic countries (between 10th and 18th centuries)

Amza is wearing a Astrakhan-style hat (made of lamb fur, after the fashion of the Turkic peoples), sheepskin coat, is armed with two pistols and probably a cutlass named hanger, while the style of his hair and moustache is the one in fashion among 18th century Romanians. Some historical examples here: leaders of a peasant revolt ; a famous outlaw Iancu Jianu

I'm just brainstorming for now, so I don't expect to see the story finished in the near future; but do expect a portrait of the other protagonist Murgu, and probably his sister Narcisa
