Description ~ Lucky Wolf ~

PLOT: When King Olaf Tryggvason announces his plans for a religious reform, the conversion of Norway to Christianity, Eyolf Sólhrafn - Norway's most famous mystic of the last decade of the 10th century - fears the end of his prosperous career. So he sides with the King's greatest rival, Yngvar Eindride, hoping that his own influence combined with Yngvar's prowess as a warrior and entrepreneur would end the King's tyrannical rule. But when the dark secrets of his past threaten to be exposed, the end may come for Eyolf sooner than he would've thought. So the mystic must rely on the flimsy relationship with his new ally, the austere and judgmental Yngvar.

Finally, the cover for my historical novella is here!

The illustration depicts Eyolf in the foreground and Yngvar's silhouette. Their stories and perspectives are intertwined in the novella;

The title, "Lucky Wolf", is the rough translation of the protagonist's name, Eyolf (Eyjólfr, in Old Norse). It's not his real name, but a by-name he has chosen when he became a seiðmaðr (a mystic, a practitioner of seiðr magic) and it represents his radical personal and social transformation throughout the years;

Sólhrafn means "sun-raven", and it is suggestive of his personality and attributes as a seiðmaðr - his patron god is Freyr, god of fertility represented by the sun, while "raven" is a symbol of wisdom and also points to his dark side;

Half of the story takes place in the "present", 994, while the other is a series of short episodes from Eyolf's past. The two plots begin as separated in consecutive chapters, and eventually converge.

I'll start posting the story next weekend, one episode every two weeks. Each installment is illustrated, and about 2 pages long. I hope you'll find it interesting ^^

I love Eyolf's soft, mysterious smile here Can't wait to start reading.  It's so cool your work on Eyolf paid off with such results. And don't be discouraged by fear that nobody will read it, if you don't post it nobody will for sure I read a lot of stuff that's posted on dA without actually commenting because I simply have no time to comment on everything. I feel you though about this fear, that's why I barely ever post my writing too. (And because I never get to be fully content with what I write )

It was also cool to watch the process of how this artwork came to life, kudos to you for recording it!

Thank you very much for the great comment and words of encouragement! And for your interest in the story, it means a ton

I certainly know what you mean about reading and not commenting, I often do the same. I'm torn between dropping a simple "Great story!" and not saying anything and hoping to come back for a more meaningful comment which sometimes doesn't happen. Which I know is a shame, since "great" is better than nothing at all.

And yes, considering a piece of writing "finished" (brought to a form we are content to share) is often problematic, since it's never perfect and we'll always come back to it after a while and see things that can be improved - that's exactly why I don't think perfection is the goal. But writing a novel is an insane amount of work since every little thing has to fit in the whole, so it's hard to consider even a fragment of it completed... I do find that short-stories are infinitely easier to bring to a satisfying form though.

Thank you, I'm glad you didn't find it unbearably half-assed enjoyed it - I promise to improve in time ^^

You're welcome

Well, I'm usually sitting to a comment with this "okay, I'm just going to write something nice" and end up writing more I guess it's okay not to write a lot of meaningful things all the time since it takes genuine effort and sometimes you simply can't afford it time-wise.

Yeah, I think we've had this conversation some time ago - it's important to know when something is finished and it would be better to move on and work on something else. A precious skill to have, I'd say With grand things like novels it's only more difficult. (I know it all too well, it took me years to flesh out my story and I have no doubts it will be some years more before it's finished )

I don't think it's half-assed Improvement will come in time, as long as you don't stop doing whatever you do

This is great! I can't wait to read the story! I love how the cover hints at their relationship - Yngvar vage, shadowy and cold behind Eyolf who looks vibrant, colorful and humorous. The shading of the face is exquisite as always!

Thank you, it's very encouraging that you're interested in reading the story!! I'm a bit nervous about posting it, to tell the truth ^^ And I'm glad their personalities show through the way I depicted them! I'm planning to illustrate the episodes in this style, a more expressive/conceptual manner than my more recent pieces.

Why are you nervous about posting it? Do you feel it’s too personal? Or too controversial? I was very afraid about posting my comic at first because of the crusades theme. People are very sensitive about that and I was afraid some people might find it offensive. I was also afraid of attracting that ‘Deus Vult’ crowd. Luckily neither of these things happened! I think your followers are mature enough that they won’t be easily riled or offended.

Oh I'm mostly concerned that nobody would read it In the past I've had concerns about that as well, especially since my stories often tackle controversial themes, but I've come to think that controversy is definitely better than no reaction at all.

I never thought that crusades might be considered offensive, but I see how that may happen. Your comic is going great though, I'm glad none of those concerns came true ^^

Ah I get that totally!! XD I'm always afraid of that! And if you look at my gallery stats, my comic pages are just killing my da page. Lol. I was also thinking of doing some writing - it's been ages since I wrote something. But I do feel rather shy about posting it...

But really, we shouldn't worry about that! Just do what you want to express yourself and followers will come. And if they don't, well that doesn't mean anything. Sadly people often prefer things of rather low quality...Too much nuance is...too complicated for many!
