Description ~ Eyolf Solhrafn ~

"I hear he is about thirty winters old, though he sports that kind of face and silhouette upon which years seem to pass unimprinted. By his clean-shaven cheek he seems to be in his teens, while those heavy and fleshy lips might well belong to a maiden. But his beak-like nose is gashed by an old scar and, above it, imperious iron-grey eyes shine keen like pools of water shaded by an arched and proud brow, betraying his maturity."

My enrollment illustration for the new round of ! I present to you Eyolf Solhrafn, the guy you're going to see a lot of in the next few months!

He is a new character of mine who will be a protagonist in a short-story that I hope to finish with the aid of the training. It will be fun and a novelty for me making up a character from scratch during the training!

I can't say more (I'll keep his secrets for the "Guess Who" task), but Eyolf is a character from Yngvar's past. A co-worker, we might say ^^

About the illustration: You know that moment when you think "This seems like a good opportunity to practice drawing hands" and then you regret the decision for the next few frustrating hours? Well, now I do Plus, I got over-zealous with the textures and it seems like he's missing a finger tip, but everything's there

Media: acrylics on paper

I love the way you've described him, and the lighting makes him look really mysterious and fascinating. I kept seeing him in your new works while scrolling through the deviation pile and was really confused - I don't remember an Eyolf! But looking at the comment below, it seems he's quite new! Can't wait to find out more. ^^

Thank you so much for checking this out and for catching up with my Eyolf stuff!  Yes, he's fairly new and he's developed very much since May when I first got the idea of creating a male vǫlva - I'm still nowhere near finishing his story (which is supposed to be a novella, 40-ish pages long) though.

No problem! It was a nice surprise to see new stuff when I came back. I should probably do more on my newer characters as well, or at least reveal more stuff lol. So far I just throw out something pretty with hardly any information.

(Deepest apologies for not commenting sooner on your new works featuring Eyolf! )

Starting with scratch with a brand-new character can be equally daunting and rewarding- esp working through the development and learning about the character, their life-story, and their personality gradually come to life!

It's really fantastic you chose to enroll Eyolf in the current round of OC-Training!

Your written description of Eyolf is at once arresting and evokes our captive interest-the contradiction of his youthful features against his scars and steely eyes hardened by wary experience-and your artistic depiction of Eyolf is equally riveting.

Your staggering amount of research to achieve such a high level of accuracy is mind-blowing to say the least, and the details of Eyolf's design and profession are impressive.

He feels, of course, a person from his own time, yet you have this incredible talent of creating people from past centuries and endowing them with such human natures, they feel like flesh and blood people we could easily encounter today in our age.

It begs repeating again how impressive the details are here- from Eyolf's undercut topped with a sleek, neat Mohawk, the golden earrings (perhaps signifying his position as a mystic?), his ringed fingers (does he have long nails? Or is that an error of my eyes?), and his "heavy and fleshy lips might well belong to a maiden" -only to be marred (or maybe made more striking, in another context) with the prominent scar creasing across his aquiline nose.

It will be fascinating to learn more of his character in this round!

Also, quick question- what sort of duties/obligations does a mystic's profession? Is it similar to a shaman's/seer's?

Last but not least, the fact that you executed this portrait in acrylic is just mind-blowing- the colors blend so naturally! And the gloss on his hair and jewelry glints almost life-like!

Ah... So this is him! The guy with unpronounceable name!

From the pic he looks like a fashion conscious fighter, he have a scar and style to prove it 😆 His eyes are beautiful! (come on, he could pass as a 21st century celebrity very well)

I think the rainbow background did very well to the lighting and balance overall color scheme. Uwow master painter.

Can't wait to see more of him and his relationship with previous Yngvar

HelevornArt In reply to Kainatarma [2018-08-20 18:11:10 +0000 UTC]

Ohh he'd love to hear the way you described him  Indeed, in our time he'd love being in the spotlights (and he's the closest thing to a celebrity there is in the setting of my novel ^^ he's such a diva )! And haha unpronounceable name Sorry about that weird byname - if it makes it any easier to pronounce, it's a compound word made up of "sol" and "hrafn" (pronounced like: "rɑvən"). More about the meaning of his name after the Guess Who task. But we'll just call him Eyolf

Thanks for the awesome comment ^^

Can't wait to read the story!

Thank you very much for the comment and interest It was fun painting it, I loved using the crazy colour scheme (it fits the character ) About the scar: it doesn't have a story yet, but I can say it's not as dramatic as it seems  -it was an accident while he was working/ riding/ training in weapons as a kid, and it has to do with his decision to become a wise-man.

charcoalfeather [2018-08-19 22:33:04 +0000 UTC]

So nice to finally see him in full view here! I think the colours you've used here really bring out his background (from what you told me) and what his interests are. He looks a bit sad and thoughtful here, and reminds one a bit of Aidan, though you did say he's quite different from him in many respects. I can't wait to learn more about him this round!

The short story sounds neat too - will he be the main "voice" of the short story, or will it be in third person? But that's probably a spoiler

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HelevornArt In reply to charcoalfeather [2018-08-20 09:44:05 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the awesome comment! That's right, he does look a bit like Aidan - I hadn't intended that xD Not very representative of him, but I guess he is pensive from time to time (and more profound than Yngvar initially thinks him to be - they have a rough start and not only ^^).

No, it's Yngvar. I was thinking to make it half from Eyolf's pov and half from Yngvar's, but we'll see how that goes (all my notes so far are from Yngvar's pov, first person).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

charcoalfeather In reply to HelevornArt [2018-08-21 01:46:20 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I see. It would be more interesting to see it from Yngvar's view at this point since we would (at least I would) like to see how Yngvar perceives Eyolf and perhaps even compare him to Aidan (if he is narrating from a point far enough in the future).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HelevornArt In reply to charcoalfeather [2018-08-21 21:36:42 +0000 UTC]

That's right, it would be interesting to see how Yngvar compares the two. The story with Eyolf is narrated in present tense as it happens, but I might include this idea in a future short story from Yngvar's pov which is about Aidan. In fact, Aidan will learn about Eyolf in the novel too from Yngvar himself (though I estimate it takes him about 2 years to talk to Aidan openly about Eyolf, and even then he doesn't mention anything about their intimate moments, as expected )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

charcoalfeather In reply to HelevornArt [2018-08-22 22:57:41 +0000 UTC]

Awesome! What sort of intimate moments did they share? If I remember correctly they never got physical and it was mostly just a friendship sort of intimacy right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HelevornArt In reply to charcoalfeather [2018-08-23 08:02:52 +0000 UTC]

True, I initially intended to be that kind of intimacy, but then I felt he already has that with Aidan and I wanted his interactions with Eyolf to be different. And now they are, the only common point being that Yngvar admires something in both of them. But otherwise it's not really friendship between Eyolf and Yngvar; they intrigue and annoy each other and there's palpable sexual tension between these two even when they hate each other's guts  Neither are exactly loveable people ^^ As for their physical intimacy, it builds up to one very intense moment... it's not much physically (it revolves around a kiss), but to Yngvar it's definitely something novel and vivid.

I felt I've tormented Yngvar so much - in 32 two years, his intimacy with people only comprises of 2 twisted and nearly unenjoyable acts with prostitutes (his first being nearly a rape and the second with Vesna nearly a murder xD), one with Rannveig which is more his attempt to conform to society, and an unshared affection for Aidan - so I just had to allow him one enjoyable moment But although he does enjoy himself, he's still Yngvar-ish all the way - that is really fun to write xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

charcoalfeather In reply to HelevornArt [2018-08-26 21:15:43 +0000 UTC]

I guess it may not be so bad with Yngvar since he barely feels attracted to most people, and Aidan and Eyolf are the only people he feels a true, burning passion for. If he felt attracted to more people and more often, it would be more of a torture for him that he doesn't get to enjoy intimacy very much.

Can't wait to see how his interaction with Eyolf is like, and what makes Eyolf not exactly loveable! I wonder if he is a bit like Asvald, only less cruel (or even worse?).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HelevornArt In reply to charcoalfeather [2018-08-27 06:57:54 +0000 UTC]

Definitely! That's a good point, he doesn't feel the need either! I think that's why he never thinks of himself as gay: he knows he isn't attracted to women, but he isn't attracted to men either, apart from these two exceptions. Besides, with Aidan it's nothing physical (don't think he'd get physical even if Aidan wanted it, as he'd feel it would break their spiritual connection), he believes it's just friendship.

He definitely isn't like Asvald. But he's unscrupulous and a narcissistic prick which makes him hard to digest for any honourable man xD Luckily, not many people know him up close so it doesn't really matter as long as he looks professional in what he does.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

charcoalfeather In reply to HelevornArt [2018-08-31 22:47:30 +0000 UTC]

Can't wait to see what you mean by that, about Eyolf! And do we see any other characters we know interact with him besides Yngvar? Do we see Valdis interact with him? The Wise-Women?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HelevornArt In reply to charcoalfeather [2018-09-01 15:27:42 +0000 UTC]

Well, the story takes place in southern Norway about 5 years before the novel, so Yngvar is travelling there with his troops only. I think Hakon and Jarl Skjar (Rannveig's uncle, who I realized is a very underdeveloped character) will appear - they definitely know Eyolf and have interacted with him, Jarl Skjar mediated the first meeting between Yngvar and Eyolf, but I haven't really decided what part they will play in the story.
