I worked on the under paint for a new oil painting today. Although I’m now contemplating of leaving it just as it is.

While I'm sure it would look amazing as an oil painting, this style is actually quite interesting. The first thing I thought of when I saw this was an ancient scroll of sorts, probably because of how the background looks somewhat like aged paper. Considering the "wiseness" of owls, I think it might fit pretty well.

Your under paint is better than my finished pieces I love sketches and this is a beautiful example. I love the contrast between the detail and the hint of feather here, wing there...

Aw, thank you so much! I find it is really worth to put a lot of effort in the under paint. This way I see if a painting works and the proportions are right, all you need to do then is add some paint. Otherwise I might proceed and only find out that something is wrong once I have nearly finished it, and then it is often too late to do changes. I will do a bit more work on it though, it looks a bit too unfinished this way. Tiny bit more details in the wings, then I'm done.Β

I've been trying to teach myself to take more care in the fist stages of a drawing. I tend to want to start doing the detail right away and it's only when it's too late that I realise I messed up the proportions or something. It's just a shame that you can't have this underpainting and the final piece, I bet they'd both look as good as the other

Oh I know, I'm terrible with being patient as well. That's why I haven't finished the wings yet. I have decided to start afresh, so I can leave this one alone *and* have a coloured, final version! Β

Perhaps you might consider doing a whole new one and taking it to the next step, just so we can all see what it might have otherwise looked like.

Yes, I decided I will transfer it to another canvas to have an oil painted version as well. I'm never keen on drawing something twice, but in this case it would be a shame not to.Β
