do you use digital backgrounds for these gem shots?

Not sure what you mean by digital background (3D?) ... for this one (the sapphire) I used a photo of sparkles that I blurred a lot and put it on top of the real background.

by digital background I mean it wasn't the physical background behind the model during the shoot - added digitally later in editing.
and I can see the sparkles now, nice work.
