The local natural history museum had tomato frogs too (dunno if they still have them, haven't been there recently) but I guess it was a different species. They were even more red than this. Darker, less orange-ish.

The color changes with age , young ones are brighter or less intense ( in colors) then full grown ones

But afaik, there are also different species of Dyscophus. Not sure though if they differ in colour/intensity.

They only come from Madagascar, but maybe different regions have some variations ?

I just checked...Wikipedia and the IUCN list 3 species, but also mention that "The differences between this species and Dyscophus antogilii are not clear." so maybe they are just subspecies, who knows.

i have seen tons of photos of these frogs... none of which made me think "that's the cutest little rotund thing i've ever seen"
