USS Alturan - NCC 11740

The USS Alturan is the lead ship of the Alturan heavy cruiser / explorer class of starships. It and 3 additional ships (USS Gordon Cooper - NCC 11741, USS T'pran - NCC 11742, USS Th'rythahr - NCC 11743) were gifted to the Federation by the Alturian people adopting Federation design standards to ease assimilation into the fleet.

The Alturians (formally known as the Alturan Monotheist) are not Federation members but are on a technological par with the Federation. The Alturan Monotheist originated from a group of sleeper ships that settled their current home world around 500 hundred years ago. Unfortunately, it was discovered that all the data pertaining to their origin point was deleted from the computer archives of the colony ships at departure. It is unknown why this was done so they do not know where they came from or how long they were in transit. The Alturians believe that one day they will rediscover their true home world and reunite with their own people. For this reason they do not consider it possible to join the Federation.

They are currently comprised of 4 inhabited planets in three star systems as well as territorial claims to uninhabited systems they utilize for mining resources. They greatly admire the Federation and consider them to be valued friends. To show their appreciation they commissioned a new class of starship patterned after Federation design. The first 4 of an eventual 16 ships were gifted to the Federation as a token of this friendship. The remaining 12 ships were put into service of the Alturan exploration / self defense fleet.
