Description
I got into Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss a short while back and this happened.

This is Kaoruko Hanasaki, a Kitsune Yokai Sinner Overlord in Hell. She’s from Japan and died in 1877 at the age of 16 during the time of the Satsuma Rebellion. She had been married to a disaffected samurai, but had fallen in love with another woman called Tenko who was also married to a disaffected samurai. Kaoruko and Tenko were both abused by their husbands and Kotori sought to free herself and Tenko from their unhappy marriages.

Kaoruko poisoned her husband with a non-fatal poison and set their home on fire at the same time to kill him as to her, him suffering immense agony before he died was the best feeling in the world for her. She set her sights on Tenko’s husband next and followed him away from civilization where upon he realized that she was the one who killed her husband. She stabbed him to death, never telling Tenko of what she had done. Throughout the Satsuma Rebellion Kaoruko killed disaffected samurai, but was eventually caught in the act where upon she was shot in the head.

During this time Yokai were seen as symbols of wealth and power in Hell and Overlords would often keep them as pets of sorts. Kaoruko was no different and soon found herself the property of an Overlord. As the situation was similar to how it was with her ex-husband Kaoruko lashed out, mauling said Overlord due to the newly acquired animalistic instincts brought upon by her new Yokai self. She was caught and it came to light that the bullet she had been killed with in life was in her skull after death, and it had played a key part in the mauling of her previous owner as it messed with her brain, giving her split personalities. She was incapacitated and experimented on for years, senses dampened and mostly unaware of the goings on around her.

It was many years before the idea of the hotel and redemption that the organization that captured her set a demonstration of her to some of the higher ups of Hell. The main keeper ended up getting drunk and forgot to secure Kaoruko‘s restraints correctly causing her to break out and start killing the demons in the building, tearing and ripping many of them to shreds. She escaped the building (evading tranquilizer darts fired at her and even the higher ups that were there to see her) and ran away from civilization and into Hell’s wilderness where she was discovered by five other females who lived there who eventually became her subordinates and her closest friends; Say’ri and Yen’fay, two Shīsā Yokai, Flora Rosario, a fox Sinner, Reina Aster, a wolf Sinner, and Scarlet Everhart, a bear Sinner. After being told she was to be the new Yokai Overlord in the Pride Ring as the previous one had mysteriously disappeared, she took the title of Oinari-sama.

Kaoruko has the powers of a Kitsune as well as the strengths and weaknesses, but also has the ability to use and control poison-fire while using daggers, knives and shurikens as physical weapons.

In real mythology Yokai are spirits and not comparable to the western version of demons.

The way I portray Yokai here is that they aren’t a demon nor an angel, but can end up in Heaven or Hell after death and can even be born in either place, HOWEVER, they have easier access to the living world because of their definition as a spirit. They don’t have as flexible anatomy as demons do upon death and can still be killed again, although only by very specific ways depending on the type of Yokai. Some Yokai have connections to Kami (deities). As a Kitsune Kaoruko will gain a tail through wisdom and once she has all nine her fur will turn white and she will become a messenger for the Kami Inari, leaving Hell and all her friends and companions. This very future situation ends up becoming something some of her friends don’t want and causes them to try and prevent or slow down the process.
