“Because the world is so deep and wide, and the earth has a heartbeat I can feel in my chest, and every morning the sky breathes in darkness and breathes out light and every evening the sun flickers down like a kerosene lamp so it burns the clouds and turns to ash. And so we poke holes through the night with our eyes until we can see into infinity, or heaven, or whatever still shines through all that oblivion. But I think we should look up at the universe and learn something new from it every time, and even though all that light’s from long-dead gas and clouds of dust, it doesn’t even matter because we’ve made it all immortal in sky-maps and star-globes. Nothing is ever really temporary.”
