Description A commissioned (and rather gruesome) comic I did this January for a magazine of an old Congolese trickster fable. The text has been adapted by Frank Jonker, I did the artwork.

Inked with a Pentel Pocket brushpen, colored with watercolors.

Translation:

Panel 1
One day Kabundi saw the hunters that were looking for game. He warned the animals...
"It would be good if we all stopped walking. If the animals that have hooves cut of their hooves, that have paws cut off their paws, so the hunters can't find our tracks anymore..."
All animals thought it was a good trick of Kabundi. They cut off their paws and decided to stay still on one spot without walking around any longer.

Panel 2
But at night...

Panel 3
-

Panel 4
"Hippo, we forbade walking around! Then why do you go and wander around anyway? You betray us and that is why we shall kill you."
"But..."

Panel 5
And the night after that...

Panel 6
"We forbade walking around. Why do you walk around anyway?"
"You betray us. We shall kill you."

Panel 7
And so...

THE END.

I wonder what Kabundi gains from all of this :/ Absolutely nothing. Those trickster fables are always a bit silly.

What species is Kabundi?

From the stories it's never really clear, but judging by the art and the fact that he's called a squirrel/marten, I decided to draw him as a kusimanse (a mongoose species).

Probably a folklorist would know... Google also comes up with some calling him a weasel.
I found another story with him in it that involved pulling out eyeballs for soup. Are they all that gruesome...? ._.
