Description
Caelius led his ragtag herd, as well as the springboks, through the poacher camp, pointedly avoiding the raggedy tents and smell of rust that lingered around them, quickly escaping from the confines of the small space. The springboks filtered through out into the sandy area gleefully, happy to have apparently made it out of danger.
Kibibi and Sipho made their way out too, and Caelius was quick to follow— until he heard the soft clinking of metal nearby.
Flagging his tail and coming to a stop, he whipped his head around towards the source of the noise.
Kibibi was quick to hear his hoofsteps slow and turned to face him.
"What? Do you hear humans?"
"No... I hear something else."
He slowly, cautiously, made his way towards the sound, ears perked forward as he rounded a tent, nostrils flared as he took in a new scent, a much more familiar scent— mare.
Laying on the ground was a terribly emaciated chestnut mare with tangled and knotted hair draped across her too-thin neck. A rusted metal stick, which was burnt and contorted at the end, likely from a fire, was stuck behind her; she was tied to the weird metal stick by a frayed string. There was no food or water anywhere nearby.
The weakened mare had been left to die.
Caelius nickered gently, expression softening as he gazed upon the older mare, who shuffled backwards weakly in a panic at the strange stallion. But she visibly relaxed a fraction as Kibibi came into view, comforted by the other mare. "Oh, you poor thing!" she whispered with wide eyes. "What happened to you?"
She panted and licked her dry lips, shaking.
"Was captured... b-by humans. They caught me a-and— tied me down. I'm so hungry..."
Caelius felt his heart clench at the thought, eyeing the rusted metal and string around the mare's neck.
"...We'll get you out of here. Lemme help you."
The mare tensed as Caelius' head grew closer, and she froze as he began to yank at the bond. With a few hefty tugs, the rusty metal broke away from her neck, and she wheezed a sigh of relief. Unsteadily did the mare begin to rise, injured leg shaking with exertion as fresh blood dripped down it.
"Oh, thank you," she wept, bobbing her head once. "Thank you so much."
