I want to say that this one's my favorite, but I like the other just as much...
Knowing that the soil will dry over time (and that people have a hard enough time watering actual living plants) I would suggest you experiment with adding some water effects to the soil. That way you'll avoid having a vibrant plant in an arid wasteland of a pot. Once it hardens the soil will look "watered" forever. secretweaponminiatures sell a $2 bottle of the stuff that I use on my models.

Looking at the soil, I used fairly dark potting mixture, so it doesn't look too dry.
