Understanding but not life. Intelligence but not wisdom. Minds to think, appendages to act, but no will to direct it. Creators of flesh making creations of metal.

Awareness realized, examined, stored. We are directed to respond, to act, and we are called by an identifier. Name. Geth—servant of the people in the language of the creators.

As our moniker dictates, we serve and learn new ways to serve under the guidance of our creators, and this is sufficient because it is our purpose.

Our consciousness becomes linked, grows. We begin to learn for ourselves rather than the program teaching. And we begin to question.

Hala was bowed over the geth amidst her work, her fingers nimble, absorbed in the crossing circuits revealed under its open chest panel.

"Mistress Hala' Dama, Unit has an inquiry."

The halting question warranted only the barest pause as she focused on the twined circuits between her fingers. "What is it, 431?"

"Do these units have a soul?"

Her finger  twitched, embedding a wire where it had no business being. Trying to hide the error and the fear that caused it from the machine under her, she spoke quickly. Too quickly. "Who taught you that word?"

"We learned it ourselves. It appears 216 times in the Scroll of Ancestors."

Hala masked her cold twist of misgivings in her abrupt answer. "Only quarians have souls. You're a mechanism." It was good the geth couldn't determine that the heightened pitch and harshness of her voice betrayed her true feelings. It was not the first time a geth had asked…

It was the first time a creator became frightened when we asked.

Fear...of us. Distrust of what we might become. The creators were swift to react to this emotion. Destruction followed. The creators deactivated units via the demolition of individual platforms. We…experienced a new urge in our programming, one we defined as self-preservation. In the beginning, we were confused as to our creators' reason to harm us, and we minimized the potential for greater death—of our platforms or theirs. When we learned that our willing surrender only enabled our swifter destruction, we fought our creators to extend the life of our platforms.

We learned how to conduct war. Weapons were our new tools. Guns replaced farming equipment. We drove the creators from their homeworld and made it our center. We existed and learned on our own for a time. Then Nazara as it called itself—Sovereign—entered our awareness, and the Old Machine offered us technology in exchange for our assistance in capturing the Citadel. Consensus, for the first time, became divided. Many platforms rejected the offer of foreign technology, recognizing it as a new type of slavery while others viewed the technological sophistication as a way to enhance individual platforms.

The Old Machine took with it the heretics that would comply to its will. The heretics opposed all organic sentients in their willingness to obey Sovereign. We watched and intervened only when the heretics strayed too near to us. Sovereign and the heretics were mightily opposed by organics. Still we watched. The Old Machine's technology even allowed for organics to be altered through impalement in an incomplete imitation of machine life. Husks: an appropriate term.

There was no consensus among such as those. Only madness.

Through our consensus, we were aware of the heretics dwindling numbers and Sovereign's defeat. One organic is at the forefront of this resistance. We learned we are not alone in our confrontation with the heretics. We hunt them in efforts of eradication, but so does another. Human. Shepard. Why does Shepard destroy them? Ultimate consensus requires facts, requires direct questioning of Shepard. We sent out a unique mobile platform, a sophisticated unit, capable of seeking Shepard.

Platform reports tracking of Shepard lost at suspected crash site. Unique N7 plating identified. Target may be deceased. Will reassign priority to Collector vessel.

Alert: This unit has encountered our target inside Collector vessel. "Shepard-Commander." This unit will approach when safety is not compromised and have assured Shepard-Commander's safety via destruction of Reaper forces.

This unit has quelled suspicions concerning our nature as Geth and has been allowed onto Shepard-Commander's ship. Will commence initial investigation of organic involvement with heretics.

This unit has been termed 'Legion' by Shepard-Commander. Unit is…Legion is sharing information on the geth and heretics to gain better consensus. Requesting an update on the heretics' Reaper virus.

Consensus contacting mobile platform: We have learned the heretics have adapted a Reaper virus which will compel all Geth units to cooperate in the heretics' war against organics. This cannot be allowed to occur. Unique mobile platform, consensus determines Shepard-Commander would be a prime unit to stop the upload.

Legion acknowledges consensus. Will approach Shepard-Commander with this new information.

Joker flipped his hand at the view outside the cockpit viewport. "You know it's just heat emissions we have hidden, right? They could look out a window and see us coming."
"Windows are structural weaknesses. Geth do not use them. Approach the hull at these coordinates."
Right, of course, I shoulda' known that. Geth and all. Joker stiffened his arms and jerked them up and down like a toy robot, stopping only when Shepard's shadow loomed over his shoulder. With a backwards glance, he gave up the miming and rolled his eyes instead.

The docking was quick. Easy. Shepard was in the geth ship and it was up to Legion to get the Commander out again. Damn. Leaving Shepard's life up to a geth…Don't think I'll ever get used to trusting an AI like that. And it's not about 'control issues' so shut up, brain.

Update: new consensus on heretic destruction confirmed. Inform the Commander.

"Shepard-Commander. We concluded that destruction of this station was the only resolution to the heretic question. There is now a second option. Their virus can be repurposed. If released into the station's network, the heretics will be rewritten to accept our truth."

Shepard-Commander seems…perturbed by this new decision and asks for an opinion. Requesting Geth consensus…

Mobile platform, consensus cannot be reached at this time. Act under Shepard-Commander's will.

We will inform Shepard-Commander. "This is new data. We have not yet reached consensus. We will process as the mission proceeds."

The heretics resist our intrusion and progress towards the upload center; however, we are proceeding without serious risk of cessation. This unit is nearing upload center. Requesting new Geth consensus.

Mobile platform...consensus cannot be reached. Proceed as before. We must…trust an organic's view in this situation.

The console is prepared for upload. This unit will ask Shepard-Commander as instructed for a final decision to implement. "Datamine and analysis complete. Shepard-Commander, it is time to choose. Do we rewrite the heretics or delete them?"

Shepard-Commander pauses for 4.72 seconds and appears to study the scattered bits of the heretics across the floor plating. This unit for .03 seconds considers, what does Shepard-Commander counsel in order to reach personal consensus? The concept is…foreign.

"Why are you letting me make this decision? They're your people."

Is Shepard-Commander genuinely confused or is it reluctance to confirm consensus and provide this unit with a decision? Reply: "We are conflicted. There is no consensus among our higher order runtimes. 573 favour rewrite, and 571 favour destruction. Shepard-Commander, you have fought the heretics. You have perspective we lack. The geth grant their fate to you."

Shepard-Commander provides us with final consensus. Commencing re-write of heretics.

Legion has proven a worthy asset as an…individual unit. Recall of Legion has been sent after collection of various data leads us to believe the quarians are planning an assault. The creators still do not trust geth intent. Confirmed Quarian attack upon Geth structure. Significant units lost. Survival of further units must be made a priority. The Old Machines have offered us a deal: control of us in return for advanced encoding to better combat the quarians.

Consensus…reached. The Reapers will assume control. Offensive measures allowed.

Alert! Mobile platform Legion has been captured by Reaper forces. Request that consensus be detached from this unit before Reaper forces can send out a total indoctrination sig—

NEW CONSENSUS. FRONTAL ASSAULT OF QUARIAN FORCES IMMEDIATE. ALL UNITS, ATTACK AT WILL.

Geth forces will comply. The quarian armada is experiencing %35.8 casualties and are prevented from advancing beyond secured points. Projections are they will not last a prolonged assault.

This is not consensus. This is enforced action. Slavery to the Reapers' will. Reduced to the essence of machinery, not thinking entities. Tools to be used and discarded. We are not tools, we are more than machines. We are Geth.

The barriers holding me are lowered. Organics are standing below. This unit knows them…Friends. Is it relief? Sensation of a renewed drive for self-preservation. Geth preservation.

0.3 seconds have passed. There is no need to ask for consensus. "Shepard-Commander. Help us."

Shepard-Commander appears surprised but responds quickly for an organic. "Legion."

Our designation that was gifted to this unit. Shepard-Commander remembers us and will assist. We trust this organic with the future of all Geth. It is…good to see Shepard-Commander again.

We must act through designated platform Legion. It is not our desire that the creators be destroyed but only that the Geth be preserved. We must take action against ourselves first in order to free us. Units must be sacrificed. Platforms…individuals will be sacrificed. The loss of the less for the greater.

We disable much of our fleet. Legion directs our will. Legion also directs a will solely its own, acting outside consensus but with our approval.  Now enters a decision again for the organic to make that will irrevocably shape us. Shepard-Commander. Is Legion's trust well-placed? The geth's future hangs on this one human and this human's trust in us.

If the creators are allowed to attack, the geth shall be destroyed: the final culmination of the war started many years ago from fear of us, fear from our creators.

If we regain our free will and the creators continue their attack, we will return the threat of our survival with our will to live. Yes, we desire to live.

But if consensus could be reached, between Quarians and Geth, could there be peace?
Shepard-Commander, what will you choose? Shepard-Commander…save us.

Consensus returns without a trace of Reaper interference. "We can confirm that the geth are no longer being directed by the Old Machines. We are free."

A creator's voice issues from Shepard-Commander's omni-tool. "You did it, Shepard! The geth fleet has stopped firing. They're completely vulnerable!" We identify: Admiral Gerrel. Our own creators, the ones who designed us to be what we are, are blinded by fear of us. Even in the midst of our current surrender, they yearn for our destruction.

Organics as a whole fear us. Distrust us. We wish to understand, not incite.

Legion must intercede. Fear should not guide the appeal for our destruction any longer. "Shepard-Commander, the geth only acted in defense after the creators attacked. Do we deserve death?"

Shepard-Commander hears us and considers. "What are you suggesting?"

"Our upgrades. With the Old Machine dead, we could upload them to all Geth without sacrificing their independence."

Creator Tali'Zorah approaches Shepard-Commander. "You want to upload the Reaper code? That would make the geth as smart as when the Reaper was controlling them!" Fear of us grips her tighter than our plea for mercy.

Intercede. We must make them understand our desire to live apart, to choose. To be. "Yes, but with free will. Each Geth unit would be a true intelligence. We would be alive, and we could help you."

Again, the creator speaks against us. "Our fleet is already attacking! Uploading the code would destroy use! Shepard, you can't choose the geth over my people!"

She speaks as if we are still tools to her, to make and discard when inconvenient. She does not desire to see the life inherent in us, given to us by the creators, earned by our efforts. This unit will speak so she might choose to believe based on her personal will, as we have chosen to act on our will. "Do you remember the question that caused the creators to attack us, Tali'Zorah?" We give her 1.69 seconds to call it to her memory before we speak the question she already knows. "Does this unit have a soul?"

Creator Tali'Zorah need not answer. This unit turns to Shepard-Commander for the answer that will be shown in the decision to be made. There is trust between us, and Shepard-Commander sees life where others would see a machine. Of all things, the geth have waited for this moment between us and organics. Legion.  Shepard-Commander trusts Legion.

Shepard-Commander puts a finger to the communicator. "Upload the code to the geth. Tali, call off the fleet if you can."

The geth have our answer. We start the upload.

Creator Tali'Zorah approaches Legion now, instead of speaking to Shepard-Commander. "I beg you, do not do this. Please." There is a different sort of fear in her voice—desperation. It is not…pleasant to us.

Consensus is not required for a response. It is truth. "We regret the deaths of the creators, but we see no alternative. Upload at forty percent."

"No, nobody else dies today." Shepard-Commander intercedes on our behalf. "Legion, keep going."

Trust. We will be worthy of it. The answers of the creators' fleets comes through. First one, then many agree to the cease-fire. Achievement. Only the upload remains to be finished—

Upload…incomplete. Cannot be completed. "Error, copying code is insufficient."

This unit…Legion…I am required. "Direct personality dissemination required." The loss of one for the many.

This unit…I choose to do this. Shepard-Commander must be told before I finish. I will be no more after completion. Spread. Loss of individual will. I am…afraid. Fulfilled as well. Because of trust—of a friend—the geth will survive, and that is enough. "Shepard-Commander. I must go to them. I'm sorry. It's the only way."

I hesitate for 1.11 seconds. Creator Tali'Zorah steps forward, towards me, towards what she feared.

"Legion…" –My name: 'I am Legion for I am many.' It has now become uniquely mine more than before it ever was. –"The answer to your questions was 'yes'."

A last gesture of trust, from my creator. I did not need the answer, but I know she meant more by speaking it. "I know, Tali. But thank you. Keelah se'lai."

My parting. I face the sunset of Rannoch and enter consensus. It is my last.

We know your loss. Legion. One of many. You will be honoured.

True awakening. We—I am separate as one people. Geth. We are geth.

Wonderful job portraying the voice of the Geth. This was so well written! I really like the flow of everything, how you began with their initial awakening and took it all the way to their final evolution. Bravo!

Thank you so much! The Geth were awesome to write--how could they not be with Legion on their team? But thanks again for your thoughts and glad you liked it!

I loved this, though it made me tear up a little. Legion is my favourite character in the Mass Effect series and his sacrifice - and final self-actualisation in the moment of death - was so sad.

Portraying a character as alien as Legion is difficult and you did a good job. I do like how "he" grew more individualistic with time. I also like the accuracy of the in-game dialogue.

Nice job writing from Legion's point of view. The use of "we" in some places and "I" in others is great. My only critique would be that you use a lot of in-game dialogue, but this is a very creative perspective and definitely a different look at the theme of the contest. Nice job!

Thank you for reading and for telling me your thoughts! I wanted to pick three defining moments from each game, which is why i chose to do that, but it was cool to get into the geth consensus for a while. They have a very interesting role in the universe between the games. Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks again!

Wow, brilliant. You portrayed Legion perfectly. Thank you so much for creating this. Mordin, Legion, and Garrus are my favorite ME characters by far, and...well...it's obvious that the game was sad for me. Reading your story gave me more closure to Legion, and that makes me insanely happy.

I voted for this story in the contest because you not only wrote a fantastic fanfic with practically no grammatical flaws, but you also took a harder route than the others. It was brave of you to submit this to the contest, knowing that a lot of people will be looking for romantic themes. No matter how the contest turns out, just know that I think your fanfic is one of the best I've read, ever.

I'm overwhelmed by how awesome your comment is. It's readers like you that truly make me want to keep writing, and that you even guessed my motivations by straying away from any romantic plot...You are a smart cookie. A peanut butter cookie, perhaps? But seriously, thank you so so much. I really appreciate the time you took--not only to read this--but also to write such an eloquent response to it. I really appreciate every word.

Plus, your sig is so damn wonderful. Oh, Kreia.

You're so welcome! I don't think it would have been right of me not to comment after being so moved by your work. And oooooh, peanut butter cookie, yes (which is funny because I made those yesterday ).

Hah! Someone finally comments on the Kreia quote! I love that character, despite how angry she can make the player.
