This movie was entertaining but was very wonky in structure and had an identity crisis, it just didn't feel like they knew what they wanted to do with it. Personally I would've played it like Training Day with Hal being Ethan Hawke and Sinestro being the Denzel Washington...

And I wouldn't portray Hal Jordan as a jerk either, in the actual movie he is shown in bed with a nameless girl and says goodbye as soon as he wakes up. This is never touched up upon later, and it doesn't make any sense since he's with Carol Ferris, who is portrayed by Blake Lively who couldn't have been more wrong for the part( She's 23, she was an infant when Reynolds was at the tail end in High-school). This isn't a very good introduction for any protagonist if its the first time you see them becuase then your left wondering why you should bother rooting for him in the first place. It worked better in Iron Man becuase you see Tony Stark getting captured and hurt in the opening and after exploring his personality at a casino. So, even though he's still somewhat of a jerk, you have his sympathy. Didn't help either that he was shown reckless driving in the next scene either, not too mention had no reasoning too either since he wasn't going to his nephew's birthday party till much later.

I liked the movie, man. I'm still surprised that so many critics trashed it. Were they really expecting a "Dark Knight" kinda movie from a property where the hero flys around space & talks to aliens? Or a Marvel type movie where they've had buttloads of movies to experiment with what and what doesn't work?
I heard that the version in theaters wasn't the whole movie as filmed & it was trimmed. Maybe people will like it better if(?) a director's cut exists when it comes out on DVD? Regardless I, an avid Green Lantern reader, really liked the movie, even though it had it's silly/stupid moments.

Actually, read the comics before the movie. It's like reading a book before the movie. It makes the experience abit better.

Have you ever read a Green Lantern comic???? That scene is a mockery of the one of the most iconic features of the Green Lantern Corps!

ComicBookArtFiend In reply to Funkbob [2011-06-28 22:47:35 +0000 UTC]
The comic books poke fun at the oath, too. Guy Gardner's always making cracks about how goofy it is.
This is one of many things I don't understand about geekdom; the inability to poke good-natured fun at what they profess to love, taking it so seriously that it might as well be a religious text. Especially when the property in question riffs itself from time to time. If the comics can admit the oath is kind of silly, why can't anyone else?

1st: Guy, not Hal pokes at the oath.
2nd: Writers riff, not the property.
3rd: I am passionate about Green Lantern and the scene in the film underscores the lack of knowledge the writers have on the sheer power inherent to the character and the corps.

Being "passionate" is one of the oldest, most overused, and transparent excuses for fans to lose their lunch over stuff that doesn't matter in the least and take everything far too seriously. Sorry, but I see no validity in this mindset whatsoever.
