it's about Siege of Leningrad(was a prolonged military blockade undertaken mainly by the German Army Group North against Leningrad, historically and currently known as Saint Petersburg, in the Eastern Front theatre of World War II).   "From November 1941 to February 1942 the only food available to the citizen was 125 grams of bread per day, of which 50–60% consisted of sawdust and other inedible admixtures" (с)

(Yay. Rat for dinner.)
Yet Russia's still smiling.
I can only imagine the pain behind that smile…

I fyou want to imagine then i must ask - have you read diary of Tanya Savicheva from blockaded Leningrad? It is short but so painfully clear, the young girl just states the times and names of her family who dies of hunger one by one. It ends with "The Savichev family is dead. Everyone is dead. Only Tanya is left". That short diary is enoug to understand the pain behind a smile.

I finally worked up the emotions to reply. Sorry that I was late.
That sounds terrible. I haven't read it, but that sounds just awful. I never want to experience starvation. I've felt hungry before, and that alone feels bad. To die of hunger…that sounds unimaginable.

No, that's just his breath. It's that cold. If you look at the others, you can see that they have it too.

Historical facts in Russia with love: in winter 1942-1943 daily rate f bread was: 125 grams for civilians, 250 grams for workers in factiries, 500 grams for soldiers. This was called the "blockade rations" (блокадный паёк).

In my country god only knows what they would do to you for insulting the memory of this heroes. 2million people starved by the blockade of leningrad but not yield to fascist scum. Sometimes its worth to think twice

And yes, while not yielding, we ate rats. And they ate our food, and those people, who was too weak to move. When you live in starving city under siege, you eat your piece of rat, thank the cook, then take your weapon or gear and go out there to war or to work.

littlewolfchild [2013-05-22 07:01:30 +0000 UTC]

it shows how desperate the situation was, and I think it really conveys just how bad it was for the russians and other soviet states while russia remains 'obliviously' happy

I don't see it as oblivious, I think he's smiling to try to keep everyone happy (and failing). I could only imagine the pain behind that smile.

Leningrad and Stalingrad were awful places to be in during the war. People were so desperate to get food, they took the wallpaper off the walls to eat the glue...

Mage-Madisaur [2013-02-14 23:36:44 +0000 UTC]

*sobs* Wow, the sadness and poverty is really penetrating in this picture. And it's like Russia's the only happy one in the picture, because he's in denial that anything's wrong with his Union.
Sorry, just getting feels from this because I do this Cold War rp in which I play Russia...so this is probably why. Plus, this is a beautifully illustrated picture. c8

Seige of Leningrad-military blockade of German, Finnish and Spanish (the Blue Division) troops during World War II Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). Lasted from September 8, 1941 to January 27, 1944 (the blockade ring was broken Jan. 18, 1943) - 872 days. This is was terrible time.
By the beginning of the blockade of the city did not have sufficient supplies of food and fuel. The only way the message was from Leningrad - Lake Ladoga. The town has no electricity, food, water, and transportation. Life stopped.
In Leningrad, at the beginning of the blockade, the Germans bombed the city's food reserves. Later was a terrible famine. Hunger was not bearable in the winter. Winter 41-42 years was very cold. People ate what they could: glue, rats, their pets. Many people have died.
Approximately 632,253 citizens of Leningrad died from starvation. About 16 747 000 killed in the shelling and bombing.
In the end, if you are interested, look in Wikipedia. [link]

RussianLady93 In reply to AutobotChrome [2013-05-29 09:58:23 +0000 UTC]

Well, because it is true. Russian long history of more than 1000 years. And communist system is only 69 years old
Simply, the Soviet Union collapsed 22 years ago, so many still consider Russian Communists.
It is frustrating. Given that the USSR is a union of republics, not one Russia.
"The USSR was created December 30, 1922 by merging the RSFSR (The Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic), Ukrainian SSR (The Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic), Byelorussian SSR (The Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic) and ZSFSR (The Transcaucasian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic)

Exactly!
I admit that I only knew this after I decided to buy some books and read about it. And now when my friends say that all Russians are "Commies" I have to correct them.
I am not Russian, but I appreciate Russian culture and history...
Thank you for sharing with me. ^u^

How sad the seige must have been in real life. It's nice to see these characters showing a bit of hope amidst all the despair, though. Although what they're eating doesn't look too appetizing...
