sooo how'd you get the skin tones? and did you use a grey or a brownish colour for the shading?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 2

Jenrocks4ever In reply to XxkatieCakes [2012-02-16 02:07:42 +0000 UTC]

Skin tone is usually a mixture of red, yellow, blue and even green, and the exact color depends on the skin tone really. Usually lemon, cadmium or ochre yellow, cadmium red, cobalt or cerulean blue, hooker's green (be careful about this one) and even raw sienna and raw umber as well. Shading is done with the darker tones, ie blues and greens and darker browns and always layer and pay attention to transparency of the skin. Hope this helps.

It's not really a science or simple recipe for me - I look at my source and then mix colors on my palette to match, applying them in layers, diluting with more or less water, until I get the desired effect.

What changes did your painting go through in the two last pictures?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

hever In reply to mimeartist [2009-03-12 07:00:26 +0000 UTC]

Primarily the changes were extra washes to darken the background and add shadows.

This is an awesome tutorial, I'm determined to have a go now. How long do you leave the paper taped up to prevent curlage?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

hever In reply to jezviking [2008-06-02 20:28:44 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. You want to leave it taped until the paper dries. If you're using a good quality watercolor paper, it shouldn't really warp.

failing-at-flight [2008-04-20 03:53:40 +0000 UTC]

I still find this great, I'm doing my first painting ever (gasp) at this free art class at this after-school program in watercolors, and it's so fun. I think over the summer I'm going to buy a whole bunch of watercolors, watercolor paper, and this neat rubber mask stuff you've got here. Also, of course, brushes...

Anyway, I just logged on for the first time in a long while to this account so I'm looking at all my devWatch things (this isn't one of them, it hasn't been that long), and remembered this tutorial. It's great.

So long,
Chris
