Great piece. I'm not sure exactly how to help you on lighting other than literally staring at every object you come across.
I KNOW, I KNOW, it's not great advice, but that's what I ended up doing. Or, to do one better, draw objects. Throw towels and blankets on your windows, get a lamp, put an object on a chair, and draw the object (or chair, why not?) under the simple lighting.
I'm not sure exactly how helpful this is... but to be honest I learned (and am learning) about lighting and shadows from studying things all day.
