Terrible wordplay aside, how many of you folks have played The Guardian Legend on the NES? A few? None? Well, that's a shame. It's one of the best things ever. Take Zelda and mix it with Zanac. And...that's it, really.

It's a product of the holy union between Irem and Compile. Irem you may know from the R-Type series, and spawned the team that would go on to make the Metal Slug series. Compile made about a billion shooters like Zanac, Gunnac, Space Megaforce, and so on, along with the puzzle classic Puyo Puyo. So, like, this is a hell of a combination.

Basically, Alyssa here is sent from Earth to the incoming planet/station/the-manual-and-the-game-can't-reconcile-what-it-is Naju in order to destroy it before it can collide with Earth. And here's where it gets interesting: Alyssa can transform into a fighter jet. So, the game is divided into an overworld hub, filled with items, weapons, and portals to eight or so overworld branches. Within these branches are about 20 'dungeons' which are played as an top-down shooter.

Goddammit, it's fun, people. Go play it. And I haven't exaggerated the outfit here. She's wearing like five pixels, so don't blame me for this!
